I have an 82 CJ with a 151 GM 4 cylinder, 4speed. I have a 305 I am putting in it. I have heard a SBC will bolt to to the bellhousing. I know I need to change the exhaust and get new motor mounts. What else do I need for this swap. The 305 is supposed to be a 1979.

I'm pretty sure the bell housing is different, although the tranny will probably bolt up to the sbc bell...?
never had a jeep with the duke in it, only a couple fwd cars....

The chevy 4cyl and 60 degree V6s use a different bell housing bolt pattern than the 90 degree V6 and V8s. Upgrade to a 5spd made for V8 power.

I'm not changing the transmission for a stronger one. The 305 is hardly a V8 is stock from. It has a small bore with a small stroke. My 262 V6 has the same bore and stroke as a 350 (4 inch bore and 3.48 stroke). Is the transmission a T4 or SR4? I've heard both. Either way I know it will hold up to a stock 305 and 33s. I'm not a big fan of 83hp. The 305 is getting a rebuilt Quadrajet, a used aluminum intake, and headers. It should make around 200-250 hp. I need to know if I need a new bellhousing, clutch, linkage, or anything else. Any information would be apreciated.

The 305 is the same stroke (3.48) as a 350. Just a smaller bore. I agree it is a sorry performer. You will probably be closer to 150hp than 250hp.

My point is not so much about the V8 power as to the 5spd. This gives you more gearing options for the diffs while still getting good RPMs on the hiway.

The 4cyl bellhousing won't fit the V8, so your at least in the market for a bell housing that will fit. A couple hundred bucks could net you a nice 5spd with a bell housing that will fit.

Here is some info to help with your tranny ID. The SR4 was used in 80 & 81 CJs and the T4 was used 82-86. Read the note at the bottom about GM adapability.

I have to agree with ftgiles, your looking at more along the lines of 150-175 hp. There rated at about an average of 160 from the factory and take in to consideration the age of the motor. Headers and intake will give you maybe 10-15 hp on that motor. You might wana see about putting a 350 in it. If your gona do the work, at least it'll be a bigger increase in power? thats just my opinion.

I think the 305 will de just fine. The Iron Duke may do what I need, but I don't want to take the risk of getting stuck. I just need some extra power and I have two 305s that were free and any parts are free or nearlly free used and new parts are fairlly cheap. I don't need an overdrive, this vehicle will hardly ever see 55mph.I have had it 65mph and its a handfull. It may see 250-400 miles a year. It will mostly be for some countyfairs and the 4 Wheel Truck and Jeep Jamboree in Canfield, Ohio. It will be towed to all events. The gears in the axles are low enough. I believe they are either 3.73 or 4.10. According to an issue of Jp the T4 will bolt to a SBC. I just need more info. Advanced Adapters and Novak both say they don't recomend the swap and don't offer any info. Which clutch will I need? I have a stock Dana 30 survive with 35s the pedal to floor until the radiator blew. I believe the T4 will hold to the extra 100-120 hp and 33s.

You'd be surprised how much torque you would get from 4.88 or 5.13 gears. Especially since it won't be going down the hi-way. More performance than a tired 305 and 3.73 gears.

And then you could brag about how your 4cyl has so much torque that you blew your T4 and Dana 30.

Then you won't have to worry about the T4 bolting up to anything.

Or, you could go it alone, and prove all the people that say it's a bad idea wrong.

I did some research for you.

According to Advance Adapters' paper catalog for the "Iron Duke" used in 1980-1983 AMC/Jeep:

...no adapter is necessary. You are limited to a 10-1/2" clutch assembly and a GM Mini High Torque starter.

No other information is listed in the catalog.

Early GM RWD versions of the "Iron Duke" used the Chevrolet Corporate bolt pattern. From 1984-1993 the "Iron Duke/Tech-4" was changed to use the Small Corporate pattern. This was used for GM FWD & RWD configurations.

The AMC 4cyl (1984-2002) also used this GM Small Corporate pattern. Also the GM 2.8 V6 used in Cherokees from 1984-1986 used this GM Small Corporate pattern.

I assumed since the AMC 2.5L used the GM Small Corporate pattern that it was because of compatibility with the "Iron Duke". When in all actuallity it was for compatibility with the 2.8 V6. AMC's new I6 was not to be ready for 3 more years and they needed the 2.8 V6 in order to be competitive.

Funny, because the 2.8 was only an increase of 10hp and 12ft torque over the AMC 2.5. Must have been the need to say "V6".

Thanks for the info. I thought the SB would bolt up. What vehicles have a 10 1/2 inch clutch and mini starter? Will my clutch fit?

The Advance Adapter paper catalog that I quoted in an earlier post is at least 10yrs old. I left out that the conversion of reference was for mating the T4/T5 to a GM 90 degree V6. Not a V8. But same Corporate pattern.

So, you might look at the GM products of the day that used the 4.3 V6, S-10/S-15, Blazer/Jimmy and Astro to name a few.

I just installed 350 in my CJ5, I used a Lakewood bellhousing with 11 inch clutch, standard 1979 GM starter,it works great. You may have a clearance problem with the distributor and the firewall.
