has anyone had any problems welding up their rear end in regards to the teeth on the gear? can this cause problems down the road eventually? i dont really want to spend the money now to do a manual locker or gears so kinda want to go the easy way thanks for any info..

If you use your Jeep on the street, it probably won't last long. Open carriers are not very strong. The increased stress on the carrier, or the welds not holding up on the spider gears (common), will probably lead to a shorter life and catastrophic failure.
The Jeep won't corner on the street any longer. It will just scrub around corners.

thanks for that ftgiles, but im lookin for a bit more detail, i understand that failure can happen but does anyone have any expereince of this happening? is the failure caused by not proper welding or not cleaing up the splat from the welding?

Open carriers do not have the stresses placed on them that locker carriers do. So, they are not designed "heavy" like a locker. You're asking a light duty part to perform like a heavy duty part.
Locked, selectable lockers, also, are not recomended for high traction situations (pavement) because an axle needs to "differentiate" in order to corner. The outside wheel needs to spin faster to travel the greater distance around a corner.
Non selectable lockers have a differentiating function in them.
Welding spider gears can be ok for offroad because that's not a high traction environment. But cornering can stil be difficult.
Put your jeep in four wheel drive, on the street, and drive aound in a circle. That's what it will feel like all the time.

Detroit's E-Z Locker or Richmond's Powertrax No-Slip or Powertrax Lock-Right are your inexpensive choices.
You can install them yourself with no special tools.
I don't mean to be repetitive, but the drawback to them... under heavy use the carriers break.

I've welded tons up, the only failure I've had is wiped out spiders, which is normal any way, and broken axles, they were nevy on pavement burnig ruber either though..
you won't like driving it much around town.
