Ok, second post on previously wrecked jeep...

recently after moving to VA I noticed a clunking in reverse then in fwd. I decided that it was most likely a wearing front Ujoint on the driverside axle.  I got the axle out and the intermediate axle splines were well worn and chewed up.

WHAT SHOULD I ATTACK NEXT?

Should I take off the diff cover and check the ring and pinion to see if anything else is damaged or should I just replace the axle?

WOULD THIS HAVE BEEN CAUSING THE NOISE I WAS GETTING?

Should I still check the other ujoints in the vehicle? All the noise was coming from the front driverside.

DON'T HAVE LONG TO FIX THIS AS IT IS MY DAILY DRIVER!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Where can I get some of these parts cheap retail (other than ebay/junkyards?)

You will at least need new differential side gears (spider gears). Depending on how the other stuff looks, it is possible that's all you will need inside the pumpkin.

When one wheel spins excessively (trying to get unstuck), it ruins the side gears. They are not made for hi-speed. They are designed for "differentating" around a corner.

You can replace the side gears, but if the bearings or ring and pinion gears are shot, you will need a shop. Keep in mind how you will get it there??

check the joints for sure, worn splines are common as are worn spiders, since the axles already out pull the cover and check the diff.

clunking is usually from u-joints.
