Someone, can you help? For years, I have been told that to adapt a GM transmission such as as SM465 or an SM 420 to an early 4 cyl (134 CID) is next to impossible, or at least so expensive that it is crazy to try it. But, in the June 2007 issue of JP, in Jeep Shots, there appears, on page 62 (also on this website) the story of Don Neil of Grandview, Washington. The copy under the picture states that Don has an SM 465 mated to the 134 CID engine in his CJ2A. Don, are you out there? Does anyone know something about how this could be done? According to Novak and Advance Adapters, it is out of the question. I have an SM 420 that would have the same bolt pattern as the SM 465. I have a sweet-running Cj5 with only 14,000 miles on it that I would really like to do this swap on. Can anyone help? Thanks, Bill

If you read Novak's info on the SM465, it specifically states for converting from a SR4, T4 and T5.
These trannys were used in the '80s CJs behind both the GM I4 and the AMC I4, both of which have the GM small bell bolt pattern. Click here for more info.
So, does the 134cid that you are refering have the GM small bell bolt pattern? If yes, here you go. If no, never mind.

You are correct. No, the 134 does not have a GM bolt pattern. I understand all that. However, the info regarding the Jeep from Washington state was clear. The man who sent the picture in to Jeep Shots claimed that he had put an SM465 behind his 134 CID Jeep engine.

ah, that one... I kinda wondered myself when I read that cause I've not seen one, or messed with it. it would depend on the 4 bolt pattern and size of the hole in the bell..

Yep, and you can bet that nothing will match. The back of the 134 bellhousing is wierd and specifically shaped to match up with the stock trannie. Also, it is very "deep" and requires a very long front shaft on the transmission. The one sure cure would be for me to find someone who has a T-98-A1 4 speed with the adapter plate like was avilable by special order in the older jeeps for behind the 134CID. I have a Ford T-18 and the SM 420 that I would trade if I could find a T-98.But they are rare. Really rare. Thanks for the come back though.
