Can you use the newer t-case or is it shot as well? It will bolt up to the older tranny.

I'm confused. You're switching a '98 AX5 for a '88 AX5. Did both vehicles have the 2.5L? Why are you changing the bell housing? What ouput shaft are you talking about? The tranny or the TC? Which TC do you want to use? What about swappng the TC tail housing and speedo drive gear?

If 4cyl, the trans has 21 spline output and the TC has 21 spline input gear. If HO 6cyl, the trans has 23 spline output and the TC has 23 spline input gear. AW5s were not behind the 6cyl in '98. Maybe AX15?

The bell housing is different between the 4cyl and 6 cyl. That's why I have questions.

the good tranny and tc is out of a 1988 jeep v/6, the bellhousing out of the 1998 2.5 will bolt to it, but the tc is diff and will not bolt to the 1988 tranny, so i have too use the tran and the tc out of the 1988, witch has a manual speedo output.  thanks: my e-mail is ar76@aol.com

The Chevy 2.8 V6 bell housing bolt pattern is the same as the AMC 2.5l I4. You might also want to verify the stickout length of the tranny input shaft and the pilot bearing size in the crank.

How many splines on each tranny output. SB either 21 or 23. What about swapping the TC tail shaft housing?

Just dawned on me. Are you dealing with a np207 or np242 from the '88 and not a np231?

I think you mean I6 not V6??? That would make the tranny a Peugeot BA-10/5 not a AX5. The AX5 was only behind the 2.5L. In '89 they started using an AX15 behind the 4.0L I6.

You need to veryify exactly what you have so we can help you.

it might have been a 86 (cherokee)but it had a v/6 in it, can't find name but the tag said sf8953003385, tc np 272, the 1998 tag 52104548 tc np 272, i have measured the input shafts they are the same, have done put the 2.5 bell housing on the 1988 it worked fined. both trannys look the same but don't know exactly what tranny they are but assume they were ax-5 because the books said 1998 2.5 have ax-5 in them.can't not change the tc because one of the output shafts on the trannys are diff lenghts. bootom line have a manual output on tc and need to make the electric speedometer  work.

thanks arnie

What does the red tag on the back of both TCs say. If both TCs are the same (NP231), the tail shaft housing can be removed and swapped. The '98 tailshaft housing  can go on the '88 TC. The '98 has the VSS in it.

Take some cell phone pictures of the trans and TCs and the red tags and e-mail them to ftgiles.87350@uploads.photobucket.com

'88 V-6? OK, not from a Wrangler.

If you look closer it probably says 242. That is a full time TC that came out of a Cherokee. You don't want it. They are junk.

I'm guessing the trans came out of a Cherokee also, and it was mated to an inline 6. That is why the bell housing bolt pattern doesn't match for you. If it was from a V6, that would of been '84-'86, and that is a Chev 2.8L, which has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the AMC 2.5L inline 4. The np242 was not available in '86.

It is possible, and it is not hard, to change the input gear on your 231, so that it will match your trans output. You could also see if you could swap or sell your 231, and get a 231 with the right input gear and correct tail housing to run your speedo.

Don't waste your efforts on the 242! And put a 231 back in there. Who ever, or where ever, you got your stuff from was no friend!
