mudb8-:
R&R the cover and refill..

I did the same on my 79 cherokee's rr d44 too. I removed the cover and cleaned all the gasket material off the cvr and repainted it but then came time to cleean the surface of the axle housing and found that it was done before me, obviously, BUT the DINK whoever done it didnt clean the old gasket material off and it leaked all over the place! So when you do this make sure ALL gasket material is removed so it dont leak again. Then run a good bead of silicone around the cvr and holes and place your gasket on and bolt it back down. Now if you want you can also put a thin coat of silicone on the housing as well just dont get sloppy w/it. Now if you have a fill plug in the cvr (if its a push in style then replace it cause its probably hard as a rock and will eventually leak too.)then just fill w gear oil, 80w90 is good oil if its open, and if you have limited slip or locker then a good synthetic like 75w140 may work good.
Since your in there take the time and check all teeth on ring/pinion and spiders too.

No gasket. Didn't come with one, don't use one. Only RTV. The grey stuff from Jeep is the best. Easy to clean and seals well. Cost $10, but is worth it.

And if it's limited slip, you need additive.

Since it is an Unlimited it has a Dana 44 in the rear. So no rubber plug. And there might be a drain plug on the lower passenger side (rearward) on the side of the diff, not in the cover. If it's a Rubi it will have a drain plug, so no cover R&R.

These guys got it for you, it's a really simple procedure as long as you don't dump gear oil all over the driveway... lol

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!
