So I have had problems with gear slipping on freeway(mostly OD) in my stock '04 TJ 4L I6 auto tranny so I took it to AAMCO.. After looking at it they say I have burned out 4th gear clutch and many other parts..They want to swap the parts with "heavy duty" upgrade from jeep and a stronger torque converter... They want to charge me the same price as it would cost to get a GM TH700R with all the converters and linkage.. Of course AAMCO asks why i would want to take a step back to an old tranny when I could have a new and better rebuilt tranny.. the cost is the same...AAMCO comes with a warranty...Other one takes a lot of parts and converting..Any thoughts please..Has anyone heard of this "heavy duty" part upgrade from Jeep?

Jeep has a powertain warranty for 7 years, 70,000 miles. If you've got less than 70,000 miles, take it to the Jeep dealer. It will only cost you the $100 deductable.

Unless you're running a supercharger or a small block Chevy you don't want a TH700R4 in your TJ. They take a whole lot of juice to spin and you'll be wishing for your Jeep auto back.

I haven't heard of any HD parts from Jeep for the 4-speed auto, however I haven't asked nor have I paid much attention to what's available for them. They could be telling the truth, but I'd suggest contacting your local Jeep dealership and asking them. If AAMCO can get upgraded parts from Jeep, then so can your Jeep dealer.

Ever thought of an NV3550 5-speed swap?  You'd need the tranny, bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, slave master, pedal assembly, manual tranny engine ECU, and tranny, but that's about it. It's a far simpler swap than a TH700R4 and on par as far as costs are concerned.

yeah i would warranty it but jeep wont even look at my car anymore cause of the lift kit... so I am assed out on that... I do plan on putting in stroker engine and perhaps a supercharger eventually so i wonder if the stock tranny can handle it... I agree as well that if I am going to swap it out I should get a manual jeep tranny instead of the TH700R..but i am going to call jeep and see abut these "updated gears" to see if it is a truth...thanks
