NV231 to NV241 Swap ...

I have a 2000 TJ. I currently have a 4 inch lift, 35" Procomp Xterrains, D30 with Aussie locker up front and a Ford 8.8 with a Detroit locker in the rear. I just finished installing the new rear end and I now have a little vibration. Without a SYE installed I was afraid I was going to experience this. Before I bought the SYE I looked around and found a NV241 out of a 2003 Rubicon. This transfer case comes with the SYE and 4.1 gear reduction. I have found one for a price that is hard to pass up but how hard is the swap going to be? The seller has a spare drive shaft out of a Rubicon. I'm sure someone has done this swap before, what am I getting into?

You did not mention your gear ratio.

If you do serious rock crawling, then I would say cool. There is a common complaint by Rubicon owners, who don't rock crawl, that the 4:1 is too low.

A couple hours and $500 gets you a Tom Woods shaft and SYE kit. The kit uses a new main shaft that is the same size as a 241, so strength is close. Still has a narrower chain.

My gear ratio is 3.73, my crawl ratio right now is 2.72. 90% of my time in my Jeep is on the rocks. I had planned on upgrading to a tera 4.1 kit in the future but this seemed like a good time to do them both. So is it a fairly straight swap?

fourwheeler.com has a swap aticle on the 241.

also the pirate4x4.com has a few good threads on it.

even with the 241or you still need a cv shaft to get rid of the vibs @4"

I haven't yet done it...there is some spedo difficulty and crossmember problems...
If the 241or is cheep I' go for it regardless, it can and has been done.

with the 3spd auto 4:56's are nice..
and the 5spd manual..4:88 or 5:13's for 35" rubber depending on what you use it for.

I'm not the best at searching, I did quite a bit of that before I posted this. On fourwheeler.com or Pirate what did you type in the search to bring it up. I have tried all kinds of keywords and I don't seem to find what I am looking for. To much technology I guess.

I don't know??.

3.73 is pretty bad for 35's. I'd start there. That would improve everything not just the rock crawling.

The swap examples that I've seen use the Superlift convert box for the speedo issues ($200). And you still need a driveshaft ($300). NV241OR ($700).

At least $1200 plus a bunch of time. And only rock crawling is improved.

Front and rear gears and install kits ($450). Driveshaft and SYE ($500). Gear setup ($400).

$1350 and two hours to install SYE. And everyday driving and rock crawling improves.

I don't know??

theres no need the sye with the 241or, just a cv shaft.
the 241 is substantialy stronger than a 231. you'll spen double that by the time ya get done fooling around with building a 231

when the gears are correct theres hardly a need for the t-case to be put in low range in alot of conditions.
the only situation I've been in the 4-1 caused me a problem was in snow. I didn't even need the low range because of my gearing, I was just tying to keep the temp down from riding the stall while breaking the trail. I run rocks, sand mud, snow, and hil climbs. I prefer the 4-1 case.

I was trying to make the comparrison between the costs of going with gears and SYE for the 231 vs cost of converting to the 241.

I wasn't trying to sugest building up the 231 for comparrible strength. The strength of the 231 is well documented.

Just seems to me like the two scenarios should be considered. You might not be so inclined to go with lower TC gearing if you had the right axle gearing.

Some quick research, from those who've done it, I found the following:

U-joints different (1330 vs 1310). Rear output flange - change the flange and/or convert the driveshaft. If using the 241 drivshaft, change the rear yoke. Not sure about the front drivshaft. Some said length was fine and used original?? From 241 or 231 I don't know

Speed sensor issue.

3spd auto has 23 spline long output, 241 needs 23 spline short input.

4 wheel drive switch wiring issue.

Shift linkage needs to be reworked.

Consider a Tummy Tucker / flat skid built for the 241 to aid in TC mount considerations. This might also include a body lift. The 241 case is larger.

"Don't plan on taking it to work on monday", one converter stated.

Anyway, hope this helps.

I'm not pickin on ya...the 241 is worth it, the cost can be kept down.

I haven't had time to dig up the thread yet from pirate. this kid did the swap in his driveway..

Picked on?? Not at all. Good food for thought.

According to Advance Adapter the TF999 has a short 23 spline output. It is the input from the 241 that is not long enough to contact the oil seal in the transmission. The spline engagement is fine.

It will leak past the seal. Some people make up a seal extention and some plug up the weep hold in the adapter with a screw and some RTV.

Wondering how this swap went and how it's working for you? I have a 1999 Wrangler with the 32rh and have a NV241or I want to install.

Thanks for your reply.
