I have a 99' jeep cherokee with a 4.0 and a five speed. My power locks operate when ever they want. I'll lock it, walk to feet away and the'll unlock. Or the'll operate back and forth while driving i can't figure it out. Is it a bad switch, relay or and electrical short? I don't know where to start. I'm sure they are others out there with this situation. Please help.

Someone's got to have the same problem that I'm having with my locks. Any advise would be helpful.

Do you use a key FOB? Leave it at home and go for a ride. What happens?

Thats a good idea. I never would have thought of that. I bought the Jeep used with no key fob though. Do u think I should target a switch on one of the doors first or an actuator? Thanks for the help.

mine did same exact thing as your's you probably have a short in the big bundle of wires that go from you drivers door to the cab at least that's were mine was. there were at least 7 wires that had looked like they were cut almost through just enough for the wires to be exposed and years and years of opening and shutting made them fray and short and case the door locks to engage and disengage all by it self.just like yours I just fixed the broken wires and its never happened again. let me know if i have been any help

Stupid wiring harnesses!!! thats why I try and stick w/manual this and manual that so I dont freak out on the electical crap...A truck in our shop had a similar wiring nightmare, the damn thing would start, run ,then quit for no reason,so it seemed until we had to disasemble the whole dash, about 6hrs worth of work to pull the dash apart and hunt down one damn wire that ran to the ecm that was cut on the metal frame of the dash. Checked all wires and elec taped the crap out of all the wires and now it starts and doesnt quit until you turn it off.

I checked the wires  going from the door to the cab on both front doors. Wires looked good  with no damage. The passenger front door window switch also does not work, window will still operate with no problems from switch on drivers door.  I've checked all wire looms that I could get to that have to deal with the system and they all look great. I think I've isolated the passenger door module as the cause. What do u guys think?

The passenger door module is the brains of the system. So, if you have tested all your wires and found no faults, then that sounds reasonable.

A visual inspection is not good enough. You should unplug the harnesses from the control modules and test for ground and 12v from the appropriate cavities in the harness connectors.

Under diagnosing power lock systems on page 8P-4 Step 5. My problem is a power lock sytem responding to an unlock
command but not a lock command. Only on the passenger door, driver door works both ways. The instructions say "With the driver side front door closed, check for
continuity between the door ajar/key-in circuit cavity
of the 8-way PDM wire harness connector and a good
ground." I'm understanding that the 8 way connecter is C1, but I can't find any information which will identify which cavity  in the harness is the door ajar/key-in circuit. Am I missing information or not understanding these test procedures. I just can't figure out which prong in the wire harness is the door ajar circiut. Thanks for all your help.

Page 8w-61-2.

PDM (passenger door module)

Cavity 8 is key-in ignition switch sense on the 8-way PDM wire harness. (Passenger door not driver door)

Can I use a pdm from a '97 xj to test and see if the problem is coming from my switch?
