I have a 1973 Jeep Pickup I bought with a bad motor. I am doing a Motor swap with a Wagoner and noticed the pickup has an adapter on the motor for the automatic transmission. The book says that both have the trans but the Wagoner does not have an adapter. How can I tell what trans is in each?

It's likely a GM TH400 you are dealing with. Some used an adapter plate to mate to the AMC engines and others had the correct pattern cast into the bellhousing. Can you take some pics of the tranny and the oil pan on the bottom?

According to Advance Adapters - info for AMC TH400:
"In 1971, this transmission was introduced in Jeeps; however, this early transmission used a cast iron adapter plate to fit this tranny to the AMC block. In 1974, the case was redesigned and eliminated the cast iron adapter."
