Has anyone tried using 3/16 square channel for the base of a tire carrier.  Thick enough to hold a 35 in tire and high lift jack?  Trying to keep weight down?  Rokmen sells some nice brackets for mounting.  Look pretty beefy, and all their bumpers are 3/16.  Just trying to see if anyone has some expirence with either Rokmen's stuff or trying to use that thickness themselves.

That should be strong enough to do the trick...

ok looking at rokmen i like the product and i like the price. its cheaper than what i can find the parts for around here and theres not near as much fab work involved. the real question is how do you go about building a spare tire kit. mac you seem to have found a sweet spot with rokmen so how do i go about the swing away part of this just circle rod and pipe that fit together or is there a kit for this also

two words... bullet hinge

they're used in commercial applications and in buiding trailers... they've got a brass core with weldable ends and a grease zerk... set up properly it'd be easier swinging that tire out then opening your jeep's door

What I'm looking at doing is a dual swing carrier.  Open from either direction.  Simple set up, but will bind a little.  Still swing just fine.  I did something similar on a bobcat auger mount.  Just worried about my departure angle.  The pins on each side will have some under hang.  But I am definitely going with rokmen and some of their prefab parts.  I have little to no means as far as CNC goes.  These guys look like they do quality work.  I'm going to use 2" square stock for the arm of the carrier and 3" square channel laid flat on it's side for the base of the arm.  The main piece will be 4" square channel bolted to the frame using rokmens mounts and also going to use their support brackets on the backside to beef it up.  When I get some time and it all done in a few months I'll try and post some pics.  Best bet would be to call the guys at Rokmen.  Sure they have had this question asked before not having a tire carrier kit advertised on their site.
