what i have going on is im currently building up a 1991 cherokee, it has a bad beatn up body, it has the 4.0 h.o. 4 speed auto and a command trac np 231 j, the questions are, is i found a 1990 cherokee limited with a 4.0 non h.o., great strait and rust free. and it has the 4 speed auto, and it has the selecttrack, np 242,the fulltime and part time options on the shifter, it runs, but the tranny is out of it,  i would like to pull out the motor, tranny, transfer case and put in the 4.0 h.o. in it, the problem that i can see is that the 91 has the ob computer system on it, the 1990 dont, would i have to put the computer and all the wireing in the 1990? would it be compatible with the wireing in the dash? just plug it in, or? then to the differnt transfer case, will the np 242 bolt up to the tranny that the np231 did? I have both jeeps, as both are complete, both engines run great, and only one tranny, my np 231 transfer case is dead, so i need to put in the one from the 1990, the np 242. to the tranny that had on the 231 on it, please help out if you can..

Hey, can anyone tell me what tranny and transfer case is in a '85 cherokee?  The engine is a GM V-6

Hey Mator,

The Chevy I4 and 2.8 auto tranny for '80 - '86 CJs and Cherokees was the 904 or 909. The 909 is a 904 with lock-up torque converter. The TC is a NP207.

Always, always get and use the engine wiring harness when ever doing a swap, and that inlcudes all the way to the computer. You'll be surprised how easy it is to pull the engine with the harness still attached. If the bulkhead connector does not match, then you use the vehicle's bulkead connector spliced into the donar wiring harness. It would be very straight forward splicing. The AW4 had different output shafts. 21 or 23 spline and short and long. It is easier to change the tranny output than the TC input. But, the 231 is way better and you'd be surprised at how easy and cheap they are to fix or replace. I'd not even consider the 242.
