i have recently purchased a jeep. it was running, but as the guy i bought it from was replacing the starter he busted the bolt hole on the bellhousing. the guy had told me that the engine was a 351. but with the small amount of research i have done. i have determined that he is incorrect. from what i can tell by the valve covers it is an amc engine. the bolt pattern for the valve cover is 2 one side with 5 on the other. now what i need to figure out if i'm correct is, whether it is a 290,304,343,360,390,or 401. so is there anyway i can tell by looking at the engine what size it is? or maybe someone can give me a link to a website the would help me determine this. also what transmission would most likely be running with these engines?

if its an amc 304 or 360 it should have a casting number on the block by the motor mount, chevy motors have distributors in the back, ford and amc in the front, check readers rides for pics of jeep motors
