To anyone that can help..Just bought 85 cj7 with auto tranny i was against it but it was only $2500 w/hd top. I wanted to find out what trans it is but dont know where to start. Only had a manual before. Is it feasible to switch it or buy what i want and resell this one??

No pic figured there only so many run but it feels like a ?power glide? ya know a two speed a friend had 67 chevy with one. I've seen your posts and if you can help i'll get a pic.

I can tell you what it is with a picture of the tranny pan or side...  

I doubt you have a power-glide, unless someone installed it after it came out of the factory. If your jeep is completely stock, you should have a Chrystler Torque-Flite 999, or TF999.

Hey MudB8, How hard would it be for him to swap a T-5 manual tranny in from the same year cj-7 or 8? Would it be a direct bolt on? (with fabrication for clutch pedal assembly of course)  

shouldn't even need to fab any pedal mounts, another assembly from a donor should bolt right in....

well there was kinda a chuckle when I read the powerglide asumption, ya never know what might be stuck in there though...

so do either of the trans you listed only have two gears cause that's all there is.. appreciate ya taking the time..  

If it were a powerglide it would probably be slugish off the line and purr right along at 60 mph. Second gear is a 1:1 like most 3spd autos. First gear is lower (1.80) than most 3spd autos second gear (1.50). So if it were really slugish off the line maybe it's a 3spd starting out in second. Sometimes people build trannys to have the option to start in second or first gear. Maybe there is a shift linkage issue keeping it out of first or out of drive. If it were a 3spd running in second gear, it would really be racing at 60 mph. Take the linkage off the tranny and shift it with a pair of pliars. Count how many detents you feel (P R N 2 1) or (P R N D 2 1). Maybe some drag guy just had it sitting around and the jeep needed a tranny.  

...Also, wouldn't there be an adapter between the bellhousing and the engine for a powerglide?? And you could easily see that.  

thanks ftgiles yeah I was thinking maybe just a linkage problem. And it all looks stock..it feels sluggish and no defining shifts. i'll try the linkage..thanks

the linkage is unlikely to keep it from starting out in first...what rpm is it running @60mph?

also tall gears and big tires cause a slug problem..

actually I'm a wheel jockey with the I-net in arms reach and the throttle jockey thing is an affair that started at the ripe age of 4 years old, I ride about two to three days a week, the kids are at it every day...enough of that, heres your pic!....
