Hello all... i just got me a nice 1988 wrangler...

i took it on to the freeway and notice that it's easy to go from 1st to 5th with no problem, but once i was getting of the freeway, it's hard to get to 4th or 3rd from 5th...

the 5th gear, no problem but getting it to 4th is hard... i have to keep pumping th cltch and put it back on 5th and then to 4th...

but from 1-4th shift...no problem.. it's just when i reach 5th, and getting it from 5th to any other gear.

any suggestions???  thank you..... i really hope to turn this jeep into a bad boy.

match the road speed closer to the rpm. that may help depending on your driving habits.

thanks for the respnd...so speed has to do something with the shift?.. i thought that i may need a new cltch or should have it check.

i know it's going to have a few problems but when it comes too new problems that one is not famliar with...it's hard to determind the problem and the soltion.

the syncros get bad and causes hard shifting, matching the road speed with the rpm helps them do their job.

Hmmm, strange. I guess I would start by checking the oil. Look for bits of gold metal in it. Make sure to get the correct oil for the tranny, then drain and refill. The wrong oil can cause things like this to happen.

Oh if there are a lot of gold bits in the oil it's likely the syncros are worn.

ok, i'll try that. i guess that when one buys a used car one should have all the fluids change and tune up done... and then the problems will start to show up more clearly...

I'll keep you guys posted if i see gold. if i do then i got a jeep that makes gold..LOL.hahahaaa..
thanks for your help.. i'll do the gear change this weekend.

the wisest thing anybody can do when they peurchase a used rig is to change all fluids and do a complete tune up and check brakes and change if nessesary that way you know that there done and if something does show its ugly head then you know what it should be,and youll have a better idea of what to do.

good point...we should put a listing on what to do after one buys a used jeep... things to look for or things to look for when buying a jeep...

a couple of my frieds are looking into purchasing also some used jeeps and fixing them... CUZ a new jeep cost a big penny.

you could if you're pretty handy with most things.
