Old switch went bad so I'm in the middle of removing it.  Here's my dash now...



I've already removed the lower dash panel.  The light switch is mostly hidden behind the turn signal arm.

I'm not sure how much more I should remove before I try to get the switch out.  Right now I can just barely get up through the back to feel the switch.  I ran out of daylight so I haven't removed the knob yet, although I can feel up to the knob retainer button on the bottom of the switch body.

you might have to take off the upper portion as well. at least that's what it looks like from here. there should be a couple of screws holding the switch in place.  

i worked in a dealer for a long time and have changed alot of these i dont remove any panels but you may want to do yoga first!
i just go up from under the dash and unplug the unit then feel around for the little release button on the switch to remove the actuall button piece from the switch then you can unscrew the bit behind the button and remove the switch!! its tricky but only takes a few minutes  

No kidding chit it's a tight squeeze up there.  Yours seems to be the most sensible w/ least potential damage to dash parts so I'm gonna try it your route.  Really appreciate the professional help
