hey guys and gals, I have a 1999 jeep wrangler with a 3 speed transmission behind a 4.0 , AND i love the trans. it was prof. built and kicks ass with my gears and the tire set up. but with the gas prices going up i would like to get a 4 speed trans. or a three speed with overdrive. welll my question is will a newer jeep tranny bolt wright up or is there alot to do to make it work. what all would i need. or is there a better solution to adding a transmission.

just for fun in the sun, rain, sleet,or snow. LOL

The AW4 is likely the best swap. It'll bolt up but getting the computers to work is a little more work. The problem is that the swap will never pay for itself in fuel savings. You really are better off with the factory 3-speed auto if total cost is your biggest concern. You would likely have to put 500,000 plus miles on your Jeep to recoup the transmission swap investment.

the aw-4 is definately a good option, it's got a .75 OD and a 2.80 first gear ratio so you'll be able to and probably want to regear along with it especially if your running 33" or larger and have taller than 4.56 gears.

I agree It'll take time to recoup the cost but it'll perform better from a standstill clear to well beyond the speed limit properly geared.

with the 1-1 ratio you've got with the three speed a
3.73 is usually satisfactory turning 33's but the OD tranny wont like em at all in 4th gear. 4.56 would be the min choice for me...and with 35's a 4.88.
