so i ordered my R.E. 3.5 kit and the guy was telling me to regear it, duh...but he said 4.56's in my stock 30front would be better than the 4.88's. im plannin on runnin 33's and do lots of hilly drivin he said the 30 would explode with 88's cause the pinon gear is has less teeth and more likly to have problems on a trail. keep in mind im not a rock crawler but mainly do mild wheelin anyone got any info on their rig ?????

The lower the gear (higher numerically) you have less teeth on the pinion and ring gears. Which is where the guy was probably basing his information from, however I believe you will be fine with either ratio. Me where I wheel doesn't have that many hills especially large ones, so I would probably go with the 4.56's, but if you need the extra gearing go with the 4.88's bear in mind it will lower your top end speed if driving down the road.

it really depends on which tranny you have.. for the auto the 4.88's for the 6spd the 4.56's
axles will break long before the pinion gears give up whether it's a d30 or a d60

With the caveat of "hilly driving", I agree with mudb8, though it also depends on your normal speed.
If you were in the flatlands (coastal, or middle country), you'd be thinking of swapping your 4.56s for something else.
In my MJ with 4.56s and 33's... on most highways, I felt I was spinning it too high for my 72 mph cruise speed. However, 55-65 was sweet with those gears and tires on the Peugot trans.

if u have a auto trans use 4.88 and if u got a stick shift use 4.56. i live in west NC and i had a cherokee with a 4.0L with a 5 speed and ran 4.56 on 33" tires and like it alot and then ran 35" tires and still ran good and then had a grand cherokee with 4.56 with a auto on 35" tires and it was to high for the hills but great on flat
www.4wheelparts.com has a gear pickage that u get the front and rear gears and master rebuild kit all for one price
