I am new to the jeep world. i have a 2005 TJ sport which is currently all stock. i am looking to run 35" TSL/Thornbird tires and was wondering exactly what type of lift i would need and what other work would need to be done in order to accomplish this. i thank all of u for ur help in advance.

well i supose the cheapest might be a 4inch lift and a body lift. but i think a 6inch would be a good opt and not use a body lift. also i wouldnt recomend any tires that tall unless your jeep has a 44 rear. thornbirds dont do all that well the only thing they have goin for them is the lug on the side.

i put a 4" BDS lift on my 2001 wrangler and ran 35's for awile and they never rubed but i whish i would have gone with the 6" long arm.

now i am only an occasional off-roader as my jeep is uesed mainly for getting me to work and out to the trails. i dont really want nething too xtreme at this point but i would like it to look the part as we all know how a stock jeep doent look all that great. all jeeps should be jacked a bit. i was lookin at giving it a 3" suspension lift with a 1" body lift. mainly because it is the chepest way i have seen so far to get a 4" lift. one other question i have is if i do go with with a 4" suspension lift, should i look for a kit that comes with shocks as well? and would i need to do ne other major work to keep it handling great on the road??

I'd stick to no more than a 4", 33's and 4.88 gears if its a daily driver. or even a 2-2.5 and 32's 4.10-4.56 gears for the most economical. Otherwise you're looking at a new cv shaft and a sye kit for the transfercase to get rid of the vibration for lifts over 2.5" which ever you choose be sure it's a complete kit or simply have a reputable shop install the parts and specify to get it done right. as far as the shocks go It'll be a preference in ride quality..they could cost 175 for 4 or 400 bucks. mine has a 2.5" and 34" trXus m/t's. there's a few additional mods made to keep things from rubbing when the sway bar gets unhooked.

To fit 35" tires you will need a 6" lift.. And if you are gonna go with 35" tires, DO NOT BUY THORNBIRDS!!! If you want an all around good street and off-road tire, buy Truxus mud terrains or Mickey Baja Claw.."a word from the wise!"

whatever you decide to go with lift wise don't get thornbirds you will regret it.

If you're looking to go with 35" tires, 4" of lift will not be enough. Especially if you ever have anything in the back of your Jeep like a tool box, kids or for that matter, your spare tire will be enough to make your Jeep bottom out or rub the fenders every time you hit a little bump. Plus your turning radius will be adversely effected.
If you have the money, and you want to go high enough to clear 35's you will definitely be needing the SYE, and drive shaft mods. My advice, if it matters, is this: Do your research, save your money if you need to, and get the best you can afford. If you get the wrong stuff for your Jeep, you will not be happy with it.

Oh, I forgot to give my thoughts on tires. I just put some 35" Toyo Open Country M/T's on my 95 YJ and I really like them a lot. Very nice looking, aggressive tread, and I was told they should last a really long time under a light weight vehicle like a Jeep (we'll see about that). I have had them on my '04 Chevy 2500 for about a year now and they are showing some wear, but still got a lot left on them. They're a bit pricey, but aren't they all?

Thanx to everyone who responded. i will take everything into consideration as i continue to do my research as i do not have the cash to do any mods at this point. i do have 1 question though....why is it that nobody seems to like Thornbirds???

I just put a 4" Superlift on mine. It was a complete kit. If you plan on going with a Superlift, don't freak when they dont send a drop pitman arm. They don't come with the kit anymore. They said that you don't need one until 5" or 6" of lift. Said it caused increased bumpsteer. Just a lil side note.....Thornbirds RULE!!!!!!

Decide what look you what first. You can go with as little as a 3" lift & still use 35x12.50x15 with the proper pre-planning. Wheel offset, type of flares, ect.. I have this combination, and my jeep has never drove better. If your worried about flex, don't, there are other ways around that i.e. tube fenders. Unless you really want a tall suspension.
5.3L vortec, 4l60E, Np231, 3" lift on 35's, Gr8tops 1/2 cab, Custom tonneau cover.
