Sorry to be asking so many question but does anyone know if the AC recharge kits you can buy at auto stores work?  And what is the correct way to recharge the ac on a 1998 TJ 4.0 liter.  Thanks in advance and I promise I will try and limit my questions to one a week it's just that I stumbled upon this site and it's awsome and I figure who better to ask than Jeepers.

they work for me but usually there is another problem involved, if the system has been open it needs to be vacuumed. so It may only be a temporary fix..

theres no flamming here! ask away....
I only wish I knew everything! thats how we learn.

if there is still pressure on the system, you should be ok,unless there are other problems.if it is empty, you need to find where the leak is,usally at the evaporator or the threaded fittings.go around and tighten them, pull a vaccum on it.if it doesnt hold a vacuum then you still have a leak.i have used 414b refrigerant in the place of r-12 and  you do not need to change any orifices like you do with other refrigerants such as 134.in fact that is all i use for just about  any refrigerant.it blows colder than 12.if a unit takes 2#,you may only need 1-3/4#.you should try to put the freon in on the low pressure side,or the bigger line.you can lag the compressor if you put liquid strait to the compressor.it should be at least 70 degrees ambient to do the charge properly.you an do the old "beer can cold"on the return or l.p. side.if it is iceing, its undercharged,or not enough airflow.if the return is warm it is overcharged or air or there could be other problems.but in a nutshell,if there is any pressure in the system you should just be able to dump a charge in it.if there is any air in the system at all it may not work worth a darn,if at all.if there is anything i can help yuo with, ill try and help.i have been a hvac tech for 22 yrs
