The Warn website (and every Warn winch) has a great booklet of explanations and different ways to set up extractions. Click this:
http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/src/9.5ti.shtml

Then click "Winching Techniques" in the upper left hand corner. Lots of good info.

have you ever seen one of those big cranes??? if you pay attention to the setup on them they look like they have 8 or 10 cables... but they only have one... they  use a block and tackle setup that multiplies the power of the winch... kindof like the gears in your differential... the more times you double the line the more power you gain... when you run the winch line over the block (pulley) and double it back then it's like doubling the ring in the axle... going from a 4 to 1 ratio to an 8 to 1 ratio... so it pulles twice as much cable to go the same distance which ease's the load on the winch... if that actually explains anything

I CANT REMEMBER THE SPECIFICS...BUT ON THE SHOW "DIRTY JOBS" MIKES LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON HE WENT TO THE ARMY AND HAD THEM GET A COUPLE RIGS STUCK TO SEE HOW MAN POWER GET HUMMERS UNSTUCK AND EVEN THEIR BIG ASSS TOW RIG GOT STUCK, AND THE ARMY SHOWED MIKE ALL THE SNATCH BLOCKS, I THINK NYLON ROPE WAS USED, AND HOOK UP POINTS FAR FROM THE HUMMER( BACK AND FORTH 3-4 TIMES) AND HOW I THINK IT WAS 15 PEOPLE TO PULL THE ROPE AND GOT THE HUMMER UNSTUCK! THEY USED QUITE A FEW MORE SOLDIERS TO PULL OUT THE BIGGER RIG. BUT IT WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL ON HOW TO SNATCH A HMMUER W/MAN POWER.

Hey don't forget!!! One of the best things about a snatch block is the ability to change direction. Here's one pulling myself sideways to get back on the road.
