I have a 83 cherokee with a 360 and the 727 and the tranny died. I was looking at another blog and saw that the 727 is suppose to be warmed up before you drive it? Anyone know if thats true? If it is I think I'll just swap in a th350 or th400. Any help?

idk about it being warmed up never heard that and its probly a myth. you can have the 727 built heavier than stock. my dad had em do it to ours due to we are gonna pull traiers with it. so it can be done and probly will be less likely to go out as easy

also the 350 and 400 are great trannys but you would have to make sure the output spline on the tranny will match up to the tcase and your tcase will bolt up to the tranny or u will have to buy an adaptor. or you will have change tcases. also you will have to buy an adapter for the tranny. so probly by the time you buy all this stuff you could have a built 727.

I have looked at building up the 727. Summit racing looked up the guts and told me that they are the same as the rest not just jeep. There are alot of kits out there for it. Just that warm up has me worried in the summer that fine but I use that and my Rubicon as winter commuters for my wife and I. I am a plow driver and am on call so I need to go quick and the 15 minute warm up is well. I am not a total idiot I do let it warm up but the tranny warm up says 15 minutes in drive with the brake on. That makes no sence to me cause wouldnt that be the same as letting it slip? The only problem I am having with that is I have no idea if it has the lock up converter or not. I have no idea how to tell...

I wouldn't worry about it, and 15 minutes with the brake on and the rpms against the stall, will likely over heat the engine. the 727 is a durable tranny, there are better options though. the fsj is probably a quadratrac and will also bolt on to a th400 with the correct factory shaft/adaptor and it can be had with a amc bellhousing. unless the 727 is a constant problem for you, it would do no good to swap it out.

Its an 83 and not a quadratrac, I picked the cherokee up at an auction for 500 bucks. It use to be an old airport vehicle. Its a great runner but that tranny sucked from day one. I havent messed with it enough to really know whats under it. Any ideas?

I'll have to check. I just dont know what to do I can go either way on the swap. It has a 44 in the front and a 20 in the rear. There are things I would like to do with it but....

its a red round tag. just wipe it off, It'll say something like np208
which will also bolt onto a 400 and a 350 with the proper adaptor. the 727's are inexpensive and easy to build. I'm not a fan of em but they are durable/comparable to a 400 as long as the reverse band is kept properly adjusted

I think it is a 208. I would rather have the 400 but but the 727 is ok for what I use the jeep for. Its just a driver I have my rubi for trails. I'll have to check for an adapter to see the price difference.

for 400 it'll bolt on a factory 400-208 adaptor and if you get a 400 with a amc bell it should bolt in. a good replacement upgrade for the 208 is a 241.
