TJ Suspension Tech Question...

History, I had a 98 TJ that I lifted on my own a few years ago with a 4" Superlift.  I learned a lot on that build, wheeled it a lot and eventually sold it b.c. I had a new wife, new baby and so on...

Fast Forward...

Just bought an '03 TJ "X" 4.0L w/ 30K miles that the previous owner had a ProComp 4" lift with ES3000 shocks, I've got a hardtop but that is the only accessory other than the lift, The previous owner wrecked this jeep in the front quarter on the driverside, I put it all back together including welding a new lower control arm bracket, new sway bar links, straighted the Tie Rod (it was bent, a shop straightened it for me), replaced a missing steering stablizer, replaced the fender, and new fender flares... We got the jeep aligned at the same shop who did the other work, got the jeep inspected with the Highway patrol and passed with flying colors...

Now to the question...

1. The ride is extremely hard! Compared to the superlift I was used to that had a slightly softer ride.  Are there other coils/shocks I could use to soften this up a ***

2. My camber is off (negative camber) on both sides of the front.  I've read this can't be changed, I've also read I can buy parts to replace or correct this.  What are my options?

3. I have a "horrible" jingle in the front end when I hit bumps, I noticed the Coil spring clamp is missing on the driver side, could this be the coil jumping around as i hit bumps or something else? is this clamp that important?

Other than that this jeep was a steal! I believe these smal problems are definitly worth the price!

The rough ride is likely the shocks. And perhaps the coils as well. But I would start with some fresh shocks. Also, it could be the tires if they are inflated to the max pressure.

Incorrect Camber on the front of a TJ means the axle housing is bent. There are adjustable ball joints available that can correct this (are you sure it's not just a damaged ball joint?) But if it's the housing, you should replace it if it's really bad and wears the tires funny. If it's barely noticeable, run it.

Most TJs only came with the coil spring clamp on one side. Ya might check and see if the coil spring isolators are still in place at the top of the coils. Also make sure the coils are seated properly.

1.  You went from one of the softest riding kits to one of the firmest. A simple coil swap will smooth out the ride. I think the ES3000 shocks will be okay. Check Superlift, Black Diamond and Teraflex for softer coils that match your lift height.

2.  When you add taller coils you've got to either lengthen the lower control arms or add cam eccentric bolts to rotate the pinion back down. You should have at least 4-degree positive camber. A simple lift will usually take away a degree or two or three, but it shouldn't put you into negative camber range. Make sure the lower control arms weren't bent in the wreck. Superlift, Rubicon Express, etc all carry the eccentric bolts to rotate the pinion up. If the bolts don't do the trick you're looking at replacing the control arms with adjustable aftermarket ones.

3. The jingle could be from the coil clamp on the bottom (axle housing) missing or it's possible that when the suspension was installed they left out the coil isolators. Your local Jeep dealership should be able to order both for you.

Oh, camber.  I'm thinking caster.  Time for some coffee.  Disregard my #2 answer.

I stand by my #1, though.  ES3000 shocks aren't that stiff, but the coils are.

Camber issue - I can't really tell on the tires yet, they are Goodyear Mud Terrains 245/75 16s.  Brand spanking new on (seems like Sahara or Grand Cherokee) 5 spoke rims.  I won't be able to tell on the tire wear for a  little while (I do every now and again get a little slight pull one way or another, but it is hardly noticeable.

Ride - Thanks for the advice, it is quite noticeable now that you mention I had one of the softest and now have one of the hardest suspensions.  New Question, if I add more weight to the jeep i.e. bumpers and winch, should I keep the current coils?

BTW.  I find Coffee is always best before answering quesitons, I run into that a lot at my job!

Thanks for all the help

be sure to check the wheel bearings/assm and the ball joints..if they aren't bad I'd say the axle is bent, It may heave gotten smacked pretty hard

yea i was just about to mention the wheelbaring assembly they arent the strongest kind of wheel bearing. they depend on the axle shaft too. cause i took my axle shafts out and lowered the jeep and it looked like that. so i put the shafts back in it doesnt look like that any more.

jack it up and stick a bar under the tire then pry it up watching the joints
