I have looked all over and need to know just for thoughts, what was the original transfer case that came behind the SM420.  I just found the SM420 for a resonable price.  So I was thinking if I could find the "T" case that came with it I might be able to stay inside my buget, this meaning that I would not have to buy the adapter for the Spicer 18 I could just eliminate it completely.  Also need to know if that would be a bad idea.  I have learned a lot in a short period of time but I am still learning.  THANKS FOR ANY INFO!!!!

Most SM420s came from two-wheel drive trucks. There were some 4x4 versions but most of those had divorce-mounted t-cases. Meaning the tranny and t-case were two separate units that were only connected by a driveshaft. This combination is generally way too long and bulky for any CJ. However, there were a few years that the SM420 came married to a Rockwell T221 transfer case. Not only is this combo hard to find, it ain't all that great for a Jeep application. The t-case is pretty big, has an old and odd drop-output design, and is difficult to get parts for. Big-lift mud trucks love it for the dropped output . You would be way better off going with the Spicer 18 and adapter unless you're planning on running tires in the 37-inch or larger size. Fortunately, the Novak adapter is really easy to install and does not require transmission or transfer case disassembly. It uses a simple spud shaft and bolt-on adapter to mate them.

Thanks for the info on that. I think I know what I am going to do.  For the money situation I will just have to adapt the T90 to the V6, and maybe at a later date I will add in th SM420.  As you already know these older CJ's are quite the project for "JUST EMPTYING EVERY POCKET". Our buget for this Jeep is about $9,000 but it will be a pretty cool Jeep when all is done. Thanks again for the help.  We will send pictures when we can.

I've been playing around with swapping my T90. Last week I talked to a guy in Oregon that had a spud shaft type adapter for $200. I passed because it was 5.5 inches long, to long for my 3a. If you are moving the rear axle back, it could work for you. Let me know if you are interested and I will see if I can recover the emails.

couldn't recover deleted emails but I found his post.
