Ok, this past weekend I had a headon collison happen right in front of me. It was snowing out and the paramedics are about 20min out, I turned on my KC lights (I have 2 sets) the jeep was running while they were on, by the time everything was squared away it was about an hour and half later. I only had about 7 volts on my battery, what could I do to prolong the drain on my battery?? A larger alternator? A dual battery setup?? I have another 3 sets of lights I have to install still any insite would be great.

sounds like you have a small battery...if your gonna run more lights then it be best to add another battery, one for starting puposes and the other for aux.

yep, duals and probably 150amp alternator and a higher idle setting for prolonged useage.

Duals (on isolated circuits so your lights go bye bye rather than starting cranks when you want to drive home and you stalled dropping the clutch to leaving). Increased idle also helps, but a convenient brick on the loud pedal is simpler, and is a "if it happens" situation solver, rather than an permanent and gas-using solution. Increased resistance (higher draw through same wire diamter) = increased heat = lost energy. Thicker wire reduces loss, as do relays. Thick wire is cheap. Alternator to match potential draw at idle or low revs with the floodlights on if you feel being the local lighthouse is going to be part of your life. Brick's the cheapest. For extra lights, first ask why - are you going to be trail racing outside your light zone? What can't you see now? Spread a bit of light to the sides, don't need many watts there, some pencil beams and there you go. Probably won't need all on at the same time unless you're looking for salamanders in the ditch. If the look of all those lights gets your **** as bright as the lights, then just use low wattage - looks the same, and makes wiring life easier. No-one'll notice at the mall.

hmm... any body ever pack around a brick? better yet get it to stay on the pedal at a desirable rpm?
there is a simple throttle rod that can be purchased for around 12 bucks that hooks to the bottom of the dash and holds the pedal in a stationary position, ir won't fall off either.

What these guys are trying to say is. a alternator does not put out its full charge at a idle. raising the idle will produce more volts/amps to the battery. I have seen new trucks idle for an hour with accessories running and actually had there computers shut down because of under voltage. if you shop for a more productive alternator! look for the voltage/wattage produced at ??? rpm. you can get alternators that produce at a lower rpm. go to your local auto electric store and see what they have! these guys are all correct but I can never find my brick because it usually gets barried under the kitchen sink!
