at what points can i measure to get an idea on the size of a lift and shackles over stock

stock yj shackles are 4" center to center 1/2 lift shacles are 5" center to center, 1" lift shackles are 6" center to center....and so on. I'm not sure about the springs. I've never paid that much attention to the difference. I know you can measure them off the Jeep, but i'm not sure how to do it with them on it.
