to what bedrat said, a tj 4.0 isnt going to make that kind of torque unless has a form of forced induction(turbo charger/supercharger) or nitrous oxide. A stroker kit with an aluminum head would probably not even make 325 ft.lbs. a stock 4.0 makes 235 ft.lbs.

Looks like I am being forced to make my Jeep a weekend warrior, gas just hit $4 dollars out here OUCH!(Hawaii) I hate having to do that because I do enjoy driving my Jeep. The diesel would be nice to have because of the better mpgs it gets.

I noticed that someone mentioned that the future diesel for the wrangler will be a Cummings. I've been happy with my Cummings (Dodge Ram 03)- 18 city, 20 combined, 24 hwy. Note, however, it has a stick. My 95, with an auto, got 12, 15, 18 respectively. This is true of a friend's 2007 Ram - auto gets 15 avg. (He said he can get 24 hwy - if it's downhill all the way.) Mating an auto with a diesel supposedly reduces mileage by 20%, just like most automatics reduce mileage on a gas engine (but by less). And CVT's (which usually get just as good as mileage as a stick) are not able to handle the stress of a diesel. Also note: automatics require more maintainence, and except for ATS Diesel here in Denver, I had not found anyone else who would give a 60K warantee on a rebuilt tranny. I'll stick with sticks until my knees give out. I only do 30k mi a year, but at 3.79 (last fill-up)the extra 4-5 mpg saves big $.

You can take this with a grain of salt, but I read that Jeeps is now offering a diesel installation "kit" for the JK. I say JK because I can't remember if it bolts into earlier year Jeeps. True it's not production, but it did make sound like it would be easier for folks to convert their gasoline engines to diesels if they were so inclined with factory parts.

And here we are going into the 2010 model year and no diesel. Ok, I can forgive the fact that Chrysler was slammed financially, and now it's parent owner (Fiat) hasn't had a great deal of time to hand down marching orders. But what's not forgivable is the Jeep division could have been had a sustainable diesel available for each and every Jeep model as it did a few years ago with the Liberty but backed away for what I can gather was a huge misstep and yet another fumble and wasted dollars...
I can only hope Fiat sets the Jeep division straight and gets a clean diesel motor in the lineup. Diesel already has a sustainable delivery system in place, and people will do far better with a diesel than a gas engine. But remember this, manufacturers know that buying intervals on diesels are longer, and that hurts overall sale numbers. So yes, I am little suspicious why more diesels aren't out there like VW's clean TDI technology... So let's go Jeep Division, get your act together and give us a diesel engine. I won't buy another new Jeep until I can buy equipped with a diesel. (So the auto part store is going to love me until then as I maintain my gas Jeep).
Ok, I'm off the soapbox now...
