Looking for info on engine swaps for 1977 CJ7. Would like 6 cylinder options. The 304 still works however it needs alot of work and I would like somesomething with better gas milage. I also need to know which trannys and t cases match up. Thanks I'm new to this and was lucky enough to be given this Jeep by my father in law. Is that bad or good? Thanks

Belive it or not I'm getting around 13 to 15mpg with my wore out 4.2 and 34's. Still would love to have a v8 in there.

If you have bigger tires (32+) a rebuilt 304 might give you better gas milage than the 258. If you have smaller tires and don't enjoy going fast a 151 Iron Duke and a T-4 could work. Factory specs of 29 mpg on highway. You might get around 20 mpg with 31s.
