I'm looking for advice about swapping my worn out 4L in my '88 wrangler for a great, low-mile Nissan SD22 4cly diesel I can get for cheap. Anyone heard of this being done before? Read somewhere that IH Scouts used a Nissan diesel for a year or two, but am wondering what tranny will bolt up, etc.

I have no idea on the compatibility, but I'm sure there' s a way to make it work, It should make a good runner.

Yes, Scouts did use a Nissan diesel.
It would be a completely custom swap. But, it shouldn't be to incredibly difficult given that both the engine and the vehicle are older so the electronics will be much simpler. Really the toughest part will be fabricating the mounts for the new engine and trans.
Keep us update if you take a shot at this swap!
So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

There is a feature on a SD22 Nissan Diesel powered CJ in the next issue. May '08. It's on the cover!
