Hi. I have a mutt of a YJ - 89 body with a 93 4-cylinder engine and transmission. Been driving it for about 5 years and fixing it as I go, but now I'm stuck. Here are my problems...
#1: I work on top of a hill and when I leave work I coast most of the way down. The hill also has a traffic light in the middle, and when I come to that light (while coasting down the hill) I put in the clutch to downshift, and the YJ stalls. It also stalls when I get to the bottom of the hill. I think all this stalling is eventually going to kill my starter, since I have to quickly try to restart while coasting and avoiding all the corporate (yuck) traffic. I replaced the alternator and belt, which I thought fixed the problem for a while, but now it's doing it again.
#2: 9 out of 10 times, when I turn the YJ off, it seems to be burning off excess gas. The engine violently shakes for a second or two, and then clunks to a halt.
#3: I have a horrible exhaust smell in the cabin (almost like a carbon smell), especially when I'm about to downshift. I also heard that people driving behind me can smell a strong gasoline odor. Probably contributing to my 10 mph average.
#4: Twice, after driving about 10 miles and turning the YJ off for about 10 minutes, it wouldn't start. Kept trying (gave it a little gas, which may or may not have helped), and eventually it did start. It makes a "zippy" noise at the end, when the engine catches, and the times it wouldn't start it also didn't make the "zippy" noise. Starter sounded fine, battery was fine, just wouldn't "catch" at the end.
Has anyone seen these problems before? Any suggestions? I have installed a new fuel pump (lines and filter), gas tank, distributor cap, plugs, wires, starter, ignition control module, alternator. I love my YJ, but as my only vehicle, it's eating me alive!

the throttle body should have an iac module (idle air control) that keeps idle where it should be and that sometimes fails and will cause excessive gas to be used, and sometimes the o2 sensor goes bad and will cause more of a gas smell if you have an o2 sensor...then it has a tps sensor (throttle position sensor)that tells the comp where the butterflies are positioned and that will cause it to stall too but will fire back up ...just some other thoughts to help out!...good luck
