Can someone tell me how I can waterproof my 81 cj5 radio?  Ive siliconed the windshield inside and out and still I have a leak of where it leaks on my cd player. Ive gone through 2 pioneers because the water gets in from the top and shorts it out. Can I wrap it like a condom? Thanks in advance for your help
.

To be honest i had the exact same problem with my 1985 CJ7 and i never found a solution.  I had to look at other location options.  I decided to get a center console security box that goes in between the two front seats and it is working out great and not to mention you can lock the whole thing up so no one can steal your radio.  *Just a thought*

or just get a boat radio. its made to get wet. and some marine speakers. then you could go swimming in your jeep.

will work for jeep parts!

no... unfortunatly you can't wrap your stereo that way... it has to have airflow into and out of the player to keep it cool(relatively)  but you can put a roof on it... take some tin and bend it around the top of the bracket that the player slides into with some tabs that you can bolt somewhere to keep it from rattling and driving you crazy and let it over hang the sides and back... leave about a 1/2 to 1" gap between the player and the tin... and it should hopefully help to keep the water away...

The tin sounds interesting . Its just the tight space to work with thats bad. Hopefully pioneer takes it back the second time.

hey bettblue, hopefully you are still watching this thread.  I can relate to your concerns because I lost (2) dash mounted head units due to water leaks as well!  Here is a thought, go to www.maxbilt.com and click on the Command Center Console . It's a security console like is availed by others but..........it is "electrified" with switched lights and aux power outlet and switches.  Matter of fact its featured in the Sept 08 issue of JP, new products on page 90 i think.  Hope this helps!

I just wish they made that thing for the TJ. That's the type of center console I've been looking for! It does say that they are working on one for the TJ and JK so hopefully we can see something soon!

I met the Maxbilt guys at EJS and saw that console.  Made a lot of sense so I ordered one and installed it last month.  It requires a few new direct power lines but forced me to clean up some of the rats nest of wires from the PO (and some "temporary" wiring i did!).  Really nice to have the security and the stereo so convenient.  Suggestion: get a head unit that yu can plug an MP3 into it.  No more skipping CD's  Now to wire the switch for my fog lights......never ends
