If you remove the OEM mechanical fan, which is belt driven off the crankshaft pulley, you remove a load off the engine. This will give you more power available to put to the ground and should improve mileage some too. The electric load on the charging circuit of a fan is fairly minimal vs. the mechanical load of the OEM fan. My '54 Willys fan runs all the time because there is no fan clutch. A more modern engine has one to "disconnect" the fan blades when not needed for cooling in an effort to improve mileage.

A pusher fan would be mounted in front of the radiator and force air through it while a puller fan would be mounted behind and draw air through. Electric fans can be controlled by a thermostat and/or an aux switch. As far as which is better, from what I've seen most are puller fans. I think that's because you will have room behind the radiator once the OEM fan is removed and it looks better with the fan out of sight.

I hope this explanation helps.
