Help with tires.

Well it's finally time for new new meats. Installed the lift last summer and I've finally about worn out the 32" AT's (already installed when I bought the Jeep).
I have about 4" of lift and a 1" BL. I Jeep has a 4.0L with Auto 4 Speed tranny. I think I could fit 35's but I have been told that 35's would pretty much make the overdrive gear unusable. I do a lot of highway driving so I don't want to lose 4th gear. So my thoughts were to go to a tall 33" tire. Most are in the 33.6" - 33.8" from what I have read. Is there any other Mud Terrain tire out the between 33"-34" other than the SS LTB (out of the question on my DD) and 34" SS trxus?

Most any of the 33's would work and look good but 34's sure wood look better!
Any advice?

the 34" trXus are awesome, I'm running them under a 2.5" lift on my rubi. I also have a set of trXus 33's on the old burb. they are fairly quiet compared even to the toyo's and mickey's,good handling and are unmatched by any other M/t I've ever run off road.
if you figure you don't like the trXus check into the toyo M/t's or BFG KM's, I prefer the bfg's over the toyo.

another size to take a look at if you don't want a 12.5" wide tire a 255x85-16. (33.1") they will fit nicely, or a 285x75-16 (32.8")...

with what lift you have 35 will without question fit, my last set of tires were 315x75-16 (34.6) maxxis buckshots under the same 2.5" lift. (they stink in the mud)

even with a 33" tire the gears need to be at least 4.88's with a 42rle tranny...the OD ratio is .69 which leaves your rpms @65mph about 2200 with 33's...2150 with 34's.

the stock 4.10 and 245x75-16's (30.5) on the rubi run 2025rpm @65 we need the extra couple hundred to overcome the increased rolling resistance of the larger tires to also save the tranny from failure in OD.

Well I'm not gonna swap gears for a long time so I better just stick to 33's huh? I was looking at the Maxxis Bighorns. Really inexpensive and have good reviews. Every time I get advice to not go over 33" with stock setup, my mind is made up for at least one day. Then bigger tires start creeping into my thoughts.

yep for me to especially if I had 5" of lift, there'd be 37's and a set of 5.38 under mine........

Well it's my daily driver and I don't to get too radical. Actually it doesn't look TOO bad with the 32's on it but I think the BFG 32's are only 31.5" or so new so a tall 33 would help out the looks a little. Plus the BFG AT's suck in mud down here. Hopefully I can save a little $$ to get a new driveshaft and adjustable CA's. Then maybe a TT.

yep, go to the bfg km's they are the M/T.

the TrXus M/t's (not the ss) are cheaper than the bfg's and out perform them in the mud, snow, ice, rain,....ect. they don't make any more noise either.  not to mention they look awesome..152.99....255x85-16's

I've looked at those tires. What's the best you've seen for a 15" wheel? I don't have 16". I run the black Cragar sim beadlocks.

that makes the choices a bit smaller.....that'll leave you with a 33 and 34x12.5-15, or 32x11.5-15.

Hey mudb8 what kind of mileage are you getting out of the trxus muds? 20k,30k or more? I've been looking for a replacement for my bfg all terrains and do want to go to a little more aggressive tire.

I haven't wore out a set of trXus yet...they're looking like they'll run close to 30,000 though judging from where they are now @12,000...I have a set of bfg m/t's that went nearly 50,000 on my chevy...but they don't do nearly as well in the mud as the trXus'

they are 35x12.5-16.5 BFG's...the old style casings

I am on my second set of TRXUS MT 33x12.5-15. Love them. I tried the TRXUS STS first but the sipes in the middle of the tire are not full depth. As soon as they wore down wet traction went to hell.
The MT I have on now are maybe 5K miles from the wear bar and the sipes are still open. Great tire on wet roads compared to GY and BFG MT.
I am thinking of trying the new Dick Depak Mud Country next time but I have not found anyone that has run both for a comparison.

yeah, I've had the mud county's,...nothing compared to the trXus. they were wearing fast so I got rid of em and got another set of trXus for the old burb. they do have slightly better road manners though and made more road moise. even the crushers ar lacking in mud flinging traction....no outstanding lugs.

I can't make up my mind if I want to get 33's or 34's. My jeep has the auto tranny with overdrive and everyone is telling me to not go over 33 if I want to be able to still use the overdrive. Not ready to swap gears for a good long while.

I ran 35's in my rubi with the auto and 4.10's for a while, it ran OD just fine except for slight hills and high winds. it's no racehorse but it's fine to the standards of some...pull er into drive when it starts searching for gears, gears aren't that big of a deal, they'll give you way more than a intake will,..so spend money wisely.
