Hello all I have a bit of a problem and could use some advice.

I own a NSG370 6 speed pulled from an 05 4cyl TJ.  I would like to install it in my 97 6cyl TJ in lieu of the AX15.

If I were to replace the front housing on the tranny with the housing for the 4.0L (Mopar P/N 5159143AA) and relocate the Crank sensor, is there any reason that wouldn't bolt right up?

I cannot get a straight answer out of the Mopar parts guy.  Also he claims that there are 2 different part numbers for NSG370 transmissions from 4 and 6 bangers.  Is this true and if so why?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I don't think this is possible. The bellhousing on the NSG370 is integrated into the transmission case and the four-popper has a different bolt pattern than the 4.0L six. Sooo, unless you plan to replace the entire transmission case (which is not an at-home job really) I don't see this as a viable option. Best to start with a six-cylinder NSG370.

Crap. Does the tailshaft from your nsg stick out past the housing or is it flush? Do you happen to have the part numbers in question? I think I might have bought a 4cyl one.....

Why do you want the NSG370?

In what vehicle do you want to install it?

The NSG370 is not some great tranny. It's actually not very strong. Both the AX15 and the NV3550 are probably stronger.

The 370 exists for manufacturing reasons. It allows one transmission to be used in many applications with different engines producing power in different rpm ranges.

You'll not gain any performance improvements. It will just be different and you'll be shifting more.

The 370 has a slightly lower first gear, but it also has a lower overdrive. You can change the gears in the differental and accomplish exactly the same final drive ratios in the first and overdrive gears.

So, off the line would be the same with a differential gear swap and your original trans as the 370. Also, fuel economy would be the same because your current trans has a higher overdrive ratio reducing rpm's to the same as the 370 with a higher differential gear ratio.

The 4.0L is such a low rpm torque motor that the benefits of closer ratios between gears would not be noticed. Transmission gearing should be matched to the engine power characteristics.

Nothing shows that the transmissions that come in the jeep behind the 4.0L are deficient in their gear ranges. You'll also notice that the gearing in the transmissions that come behind the 4cyl are quite different than the transmissions behind the I6.

Having more gears helps keep more engines in their propper rpm ranges. Hence the one size fits all strategy for the mfgs.

On the other hand, the JK seems very well suited, becasue of its engine power characteristics, to the 370. The minvan motor likes to have the revs held higher.

It's really not as sexy as people think. It doesn't make sense numerically for the 4.0L. Really just a waste of time and money.

You'll gain a lot more from propper gearing in your differentals.
