hello sorry for my ignorance but just getting into jeep's.,ve heard some 87's 88's and 89's had peugeot tranny;s.question is how or where is it stamped on the tranny to identify it?also my transfer case has n p g 231 stamped on it is this a good transfer case.?thank,s really getting into this jeep thing.

yep the peugeot up till 90, some late 89 models ended up witha ax15 (6 cyl) should have a red tag on the side.

Peugeot BA 10/5 5-Speed Jeep Transmission Parts Show: All ManufacturersOmix-AdaProthane The Peugeot BA 10/5 is a light-duty 5-speed transmission that was used behind the Jeep 4.2L I6 engine in the Wrangler YJ from 1987-mid 1989 (up through production date 3/9/89). It looks similar to the AX-15, but smaller and it is manufactured by Peugeot in France. The input shaft is 1 1/8" 10 spline and the output shaft can be 21 spline or 23 spline.
Usage: The BA 10/5 and the Aisin AX-5 were used in all Wranglers from 1987-mid 1989. It was also used in Cherokees (XJ) and Comanches (MJ) with the 2.8L V6, 2.5L I4, and 4.0L I6 from their introduction until 1989.
Gear Ratios: 1st - 3.39 2nd - 2.33 3rd - 1.44 4th - 1.00 5th - 0.79 REV - N/A

Notice the 2 piece case. The AX-15 has a 1 peice case.

so all in all my tranny is no good but the np 231 transfer case is good?would it be a 32 spline in the 1987 jeep commanche auto matic tranny and 4.L?

just seen that my tranny has aisin stamped on it and my transfer case is a model 231 ng with a ratio of 272 new progress gear is this a good transfer case?

Thats good. In my personal opinion, I think the t-case is a good case. Of course, there are better ones, but its good all around t-case. One thing to look at....it is chain drive vs. a gear dive. The case is aluminum case. When the chain gets loose, it will sag and eat a hole in the case. look for metal shavings in the oil when you change it. If you see them, its possible that the chain is eating a hole in the case. This was told to me from an older guy that has been dealing with Jeeps all his life....60 yrs or so. He said he has seen 1 or 2 like that. Thats my 75 cents worth.

the peugeot is a good tranny for what it was designed for, despite popular belief. It may not be a choice swap but if thats what you have run it till it quits, which will be a long time.
as for the 231....you'll likely wear it out before you'll break it provided it is properly maintained.
