Should i trust the retired mechanic down the street who has 20 years experience with drivetrain on 4x4s and says he can put 4:88s into my stock tj axles for $150 an axle or shoudl i go to 4wheelparts and pay a ton more, i already have the 4:88 ring and pinion and kit for both so this is just labor. Is this a safe way to go to save a lot of money?

My local 4x4 shop wanted 250 for the front & 200 for the rear. I found a guy to do it for 100 for both and its been running for 5 yrs. I know people who have used him and no problems. He's cheap cause he doesn't have any overhead. Just him and an old shop. This was my experience and it turned out fine.

I think that sounds like a fair price, i guess you have to use your best judgement if he is capable though.

if the guy's retired from that type of work, why not? i mean, you're helping put a little cash in his pockets without him having to pay all of the government agencies to (help) him. i say go for it

yeah, the old man down the street has probably done a few or he wouldn't offer his services, the smart-alec know-it-all at the shop with a new certificate that says he sat through a lecture and read a how-to book under the supervision of a wanna-be mechanic, will likely get to do it twice.
personal experience there...I was once the smart-alec.

Not only does the guy have the expirience but you probably won't be banned from his working bay and maybe get some hands on yourself. Then you've learned from a legit person.
