I have a 92 yj.After rebuilding the Ax-5,replacing all the u-joints,blowing the t-case(np 231) and living with a 2.5 ltr. I've decided to upgrade.I like Jeeps a lot but the driveshafts and axles aren't worth spending a dollar on.I'm hellbent on putting in a sb283 and an auto tranny but have no idea what kind of t-case or axles would line up/work.If the proffesionals @ JP wanna lend a hand,so be it.I would appreciate it

the 283's and auto's don't like each other much, with the right gears It may keep you happy, It would be better to use a manual, the 283's are high compression and high rpm engines, they don't like poor quality gas either, unless it has hard seats in the heads they won't last long. the 231 is still a good unit and can handle a 283, an adapter will hook the ax-5 to the sbc. I think a even a 305 w/auto would work out better than the 283 almost the same bore with a 3.48 stroke vs the 3.00 and they will run on the crappy gas along with some economy.
didn't mean to rant about that, did you mean a 383 after all that? that would be and excellent choice. one of the members, yj383 is working on that swap in a yj, if I remember right the thread title is "how long will it last"?

the old man had a 283 powered 66 impala, with a glide, it liked first gear at 70 the best, but did fine around town driving normally.

finally found that thread, here.

there must be another also, you could pm yj383 for more info, he signs on from time to time.

axles a pair of d44's gears to be determined by the tire size you intend to run, and the 231-241-300 or an atlas t-case, I'd probably go towards the 241 or a rocktrac from a rubicon better yet.
