Just getting acclimated to this machine and did some first time numbers with a fillup and i'm looking at like 10.2 mpg for my 96 XJ, all city driving. You already know it's got the 4.0. Wintertime so I'm letting it warm up for ten mins from every cold start, but is there any way I can improve my mileage here? I drive really slow btw, no fast starts. Maybe she needs a tune up or something? Is this normal?
She's only 94k miles and prob needs a general routine inspection and tuning work. Replaced plugs and wires but maybe something more is needed. Check engine light was on when it was warmer but the cold weather seems to have corrected things for now. Motor was missing more when it was warmer too, not so much now but the problems still there. Thanks

generally, you'll get low numbers with city driving....but man, your milage blows. try a high flow intake with something like a k&n filter. sounds like you might have a stick valve or maybe a problem with your timing. you can advance or retard the timing by turning the distributer clockwise or vice/verse. maybe spray some carb/choke cleaner in your throttle body. wish i could help you more, this might get you going in the right direction.

I'm lucky to squeeze 9mpg out of mine, it doesn't matter if it's on the hwy, trail, or in town.

I would make sure the engine was properly tuned, tires to proper pressure, etc. Synthetic fluid in the diffs/axles wouldn't hurt anything either, IMO.
For only 10mpg, you've got something wrong, somewhere, IMO.

Did you clean your throttle body and replace the air filter? Tires low on air? I'm sure you have a cracked exhaust manifold. Jeeps suck on gas. But there just so much fun.

good points........
mine always have around 15psi in them, i have a k&n filter inside a pair of the old lady's panty hose that usually has some kind of derbis stuck to it, no exhausst leaks, the muffler is smashed in a little though, lol
it gets about 50 miles per week on the hwy, when i'm home on a weekend it see's close to 200 miles of off road use, that's what I built it for.

i won't make you jealous of my mileage again. ok, i will....lol. i ran a 195 mi round trip from pa to md and back and put in 10.....that works out to 19.5 mpg. i'll admit that it was mostly highway miles at 65 mph. my wife burned up about 2 gallons trying to get out of the mud in the yard (where i parked it)....caught an earfull for that after i just pulled it out.....lol

im averaging 14 in the city and up to 16 on the highway. mostly 14 with my mixed driving. my jeep isnt a DD but it doest do to bad.
If you have larger tires then stock make sure you have the correct speedo gear. good oil, tires at pproper PSI, a clean air filter. check your plugs. give the motor some sea foam.
intakes and exhaust work will help but not drastically. In my opinion dropping in a high flow drop in filter like from true flow will work best. unless your stock muffler is clogged or damaged leave it. unless you want it loud. you wont get much out of replacing it.
