I have an '84 CJ7 with 33" tires.  I believe it has dana 20 frt. and dana 30 rr.  It's a pooch as it is (of course).  I just bought 35" tires and am wanting to know what the best swap would be.  Do I go with 60's or 44's? Or a combo?

the stock axles will be fine if it doesn't get abused but...
if you can afford them the 60's will do the trick next in line a set of 44's for sure. running the 35's with overdrive get at least 4:88 gears, without an overdrive tranny if it sees a lot of hwy the 4:10's will do fine, just a little under powered with a 6 cyl.

I found some 44's with 2.73 gears, will that be sufficient?

what I think he meant to put up was 3.73 gears. and it would work but you will suffer from the gearing that is in the axles. it would work until you can find the funds to switch out the 3.73 gears for some 4.10's

i'm going to be running 33's with 3.73 gears. it's not the best combo but it will work if you don't abuse it.

so, 4.88 would be the best.  i don't do any rock crawling (yet) if it sees any abuse, it's me taking it out thru the mud.  mostly i drive around town.  now what my boyfriend does with it when he slyly takes it while i'm sleeping, i have no idea.

you sound like one of my sisters,
with the 35" tires the 4:88's are gonna give you the torque back that the huge tire robbed, at the very least a 4:10 gear but you won't be happy.
4:56 can be a good option also if you don't have an overdrive tranny and still want to drive 75mph on the hwy.

your axles should be a 30 up front and AMC 20 out back. both will work for what you want but maybe look in to some one piece axles for the rear AMC 20. It is possible that it is a dana 44 in rear if you have a quadra-trac t-case.

After doing a little checking it is very possible you do have 2:73 gears.....Ouch
the AMC's have a code stamped on them that you can look up for the ratio.
