I recently purchased an 84 CJ 7 for parts. It has an AMC 360 installed with a Quadrajet 4 Barrel carb, and what appears to be a high-rise intake manifold. The air cleaner is very large and actually would not clear the hood if it were not for the three inch body lift. Is there a way to identify by numbers or markings if the intake manifold is not stock for the engine? Also, I would like to identify what year and model vehicle the motor was taken from. I am assuming a Wagoneer. The person I purchased the Jeep from is not the one who did the work to it and had no clue.

The 360 was offered in full-sized Jeeps such as the J-series truck and Wagoneer from 1971 to 1991 as the last carbed motor available. It came with a 2bbl. In 1973 they offered the 360 with the 4bbl option. Having a high rise intake, I highly doubt the 4bbl is original. I am not sure what carb they did offer on the 4bbls. Without the serial numbers we can't tell you exactly what year, vehicle, or options it had on it. I don't know exactly where the number is, but I will let you know if I am able to look today.

I know what vehicles it was offered in and that it was the last carbed motor. A Quadrajet is a GM brand carb. I knew that it wasnt the original carb. The real focus of my question is, can a 360 be installed without a body lift. More specifically, will the hood clear the carb? This parts jeep's hood would not clear the carb if it were not for the 3" body lift, this is what grabbed my eye.

Yes, the 360 can be installed without a body lift. I have an 81 CJ5 that had a 360 in it without a body lift. It also had plenty of room for a high rise intake. A lot of CJ7s came with the 304 which is the same block. Check to make sure they motor mounts are not homemade. That could be why the motor sits higher.

That may just be the answer, cuz this motor definately sits high. It will bolt right up to the original mounts on the frame of my good CJ 7, correct? That should help because then I know that it is mounted on factory mounts. I was only able to look at it briefly but I didnt notice any welds, cuts, or excess holes drilled that would indicate the motor mounts were altered. Thanks for the advice. I think we are going to start the transplant this weekend.

You probably won't be able to use the original motor mounts depending on what motor that was in it before. Be sure to post some pictures!

There is a 258 in the good jeep that will be receiving the 360. Worst case I will try to lower it in and realize that i have to move the motor mounts. I will try to get some pics up of the shannanigans.

Here is another issue. Will my T-5 even handle the power of a 360? I would eventually like to go to an automatic. How easy would it be to put an automatic froma a Wagoneer in it? How costly would the T-case adapter be? Is a 727 Torqueflite the trans in Wagoneers?

the 727 is a good tranny but the best way will be a gm th 400 they are much stronger and you won't have to worry about breaking the reverse band when you get it stuck. It shouldn't be hard to find a 400 with a the amc case, I have a couple of them with quadra-tracs still bolted on them.

So I should be able to find a TH 400 that already has an AMC case on it? I plan on keeping my Dana 300, it seems to pretty solid.

checkout craigslist.comwww.craigslist.com if you haven't heard of it before, click on the city you live in or the nearest major city. you'll find what you're looking for, if not expand your search.

I tried a few surrounding cities with no luck. I'm sure I will be able to find one in a junk yard. Did they come in the Wagoneers and J series trucks? By the way dont accidently type in craiglist.com, it's definately a porn site.
