I have a 3.8L 232 I6 in my 1976 CJ5 and currently have a rebuilt Carter carb on it which needs to be rebuilt/replaced once again (lasted less than 2 yrs.). I am low on funding right now so a $250-300 Weber Carb upgrade does not look likely anytime soon. As far as stock replacements go, on the Advanced Auto online store, there looks like 2 options for under $130, another Rebuilt Carter like the one on it now, or a Rebuilt Holley II Carb. Is the Holley a better choice for replacement than the Carter? Or is the Holley for a different engine type than the Carter and not an option? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Either carb will be a good choice, Holley's and carter/edelbrock carbs have correct applications for most everything on the road. If was to say more it would turn into an opiniated bunch of bs, I have and use both. the better choice is gonna be what fits you budget. peformance carbs don't always go well with stock engines.
what are the symptoms you are having? most of the time the carb isn't the problem. Idle mixture, float adjustment/blocked needle valve, freeing sticky linkage, or a new accelerator pump usally takes care of most carb problems, espesially for the carter. a gasket/rebuild kit is alot cheaper than a new carb. Timming problems often seem like carb problems.
