CJ5 Carb Options?

I own a 1976 CJ5 with the original I6 238 Engine 33's and 4" lift. My brother replaced the original carb 2 years ago as it was severely in need of it. Replaced it with a rebuilt stock replacement carb (had a local jeep shop replace it and set it with "summer settings"). The jeep has been sitting for 12 mo now as the new carb was giving problems before I inherited it last yr and did not have time/knowledge to figure out the carb problem/adjustment (which my brother felt was due to the cold weather and did not know how to adjust it to "winter settings" either). My choices...1) Try to clean out/ adjust the carb 2) Rebuild the carb 3) Buy a new stock carb 4) upgrade the carb with one that is better quality and less headache (if this is your answer, what are some good upgrade options for my engine?). Thanks.

Nothing like a Carter Carb.  I've only ever owned one Jeep that did not have a crap carb on it.  My advice is to just by an aftermarket carb seeing how your brother already spent money on rebuilding one and that got him nowhere.  www.quadratec.com has some good replacement Weber carburetors.  They are not exactly cheap though, upper $200s-$300s, but claim an increase in horsepower also.  Plus then you'll have a nice shiny little engine topper

put vacuum gage on it and adjust the mixture screws at an idle for the highest vacuum you can get. the winter and summer setting thing is BS.

what is it doing or not anyway?

Thanks for the advice. Was looking at the Advanced Auto website and when typed in, it gives 4 different carb options for the CJ51976 I6 232 3.8L Engine. 2 Carter rebuilds and 2 Holley rebuilds for roughly the same price ($99-130). I am supposing that the 2 versions of each are for two different engine manuf. types? How do I tell/ where do I look to see an ID that will tell me which type? Since it has a Carter currently, how are the Holly's in comparison? Will a holley work? If holley sucks just as much as the carters, edlebrock or weber and where do I find the recommended size for my engine? Sorry a lot of questions but appreciate any help. Thanks.

Like Shull said, go to Quadratec.com and check them out. They got alot of choices for carbs and spacer/adaptors. They also have a phone # 1-800-745-6037 for customer service.
