I finally got around to building Part I of my cold air intake.  Simple, quick and easy and less than $10 bucks give you a cold air intake that works better than anything in the marketplace...  Pics and writeup:

How can you  honestly say that it "works better than anything else on the market"?

Seriously... how much have you spent on R&D? What does your intake flow? Have you ran a flow meter on it? What kind of CFM can it handle? What does it dyno out at? How long will it hold up to the extreme under hood temps? Vibration? Water resistance?

Now I'm  not doubting that it works well, and I can really apprecaite the initiative you took to build your own along with the creativity... but thats a pretty big statement you made there with zero proof.

Anyway...

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

Glad you mentioned it...
Having spent a good part of my career in R&D as an engineer we have an old saying:   "sometimes the obvious is obvious".

Albeit I certainly did not do any studies on it, for certain I can say there is (surprise to me even) a "seat of the pants" improvement in overall performance.

It is OEM tubing and a large K&N cone filter ( which if you ask them it flows better etc) and I did indeed channel cooler air from behind the headlight bucket and from underneath the Jeep.

And cool air provides a noticeable inprovement in overall performance...again, nothing I really need to prove, the R&D has long ago been done of this.

Had you read the writeup then you would know the intent was "COOLER" air not fancy or trick polished alum tubes (that only soak up heat like a sponge).  And you would also have read where I NOTICED that Jeep indeed has used the backside of the headlight bucket as a air intake...ask them about R&D.  I also removed my headlight trim ring to increase the flow.

Fact:  "Trash Air" works!  and even tho it was tongue-in-cheek IMO it works better than anything in the market:  $10 bucks + cold air = better performance.

I do not know of any current cold air system that channels the air from the backside of the headlight bucket...do you?

Thank you for you comments.

That's still not proof that it "works better than anything else", it's opinion.

Run it on a dyno, back to back to back with stock and a leading intake kit, post the results, then we'll talk. Until then, cool idea, good job on the build and write up (which I did read by the way), and keep doing what you're doing.

Albeit I understand where you are coming from I fail to see the value.

A cooler, denser air charge will be better for the engine, fact or fiction?

Cold air kits are nothing new in the auto world, be racing the 1/4 mile or 24 of LeMans, OEM late 60's Chevelle or a OEM Jeep CJ 5.  What am I trying to prove.

The premise was never increased power, but rather increased cooler air.

That said, it works.  I have gone from running 91-92 octane and having pre-detonation at any speed beyond about 45 mph to running 87 octane and no pre-det   at all.  Which was my intended goal.

I did thing using a combo of mods, not just this one...in fact this was the last in a series of mods to reduce underhood temps and get cooler air to the intake.

Go check the latest mod to this which is "Part II" where I use the OEM air box, it is on the same page and with new pics.

I never said it didn't work, I bet it works fantastic.

The part I took issue with was the "better than anything in the marketplace" a better phrase would have been "better than stock".

I'm not asking you to prove it's better than the stock set up, I'm asking you to prove that it is the best on the market.

I'm thinking about running a pipe off my stock filter box down to about bumper height to draw cold air. I know, I'll have to insulate the rest of the system. Just figured I try it....I'm not ready to give up my jack location yet.
