Does anyone know if and when Jeep will put the 3.0 CRD in the Wrangler?  It's already being used in the Commander in the UK.

I think you mean the 2.7L CRD. The 3.0L is what is in the current Grand. It's a clean diesel, just waaay too expensive and refined to put in a Wrangler at the factory. Just heard another rumor about another diesel Jeep coming soon though. More details in the March issue...when it comes out.

I'm actually getting ready to dump a mechanical gm6.5 with a banks sidewinder in a cj-7, I've almost got everything rounded up. the cj isn't in real good shape but I'm gonna thrash it anyway. I still can't make up my mind on a standard or auto trans, I have both, and prefer the auto but... all that torque makes the manual more managable.

just not home very often so maybe over thanksgiving, Christmas and new years I may get something accomplished.

We're kinda waiting for a cost effective swap. I mean would you pay $10,000 to have a driveable diesel engine in your Jeep? There may seem to be a lot of diesel engines out there but the problem is very few of them make a good swap for one reason or another. Right now the best bet is likely the Cummins 4BT. But it's just so industrial and heavy that it's not that great for a daily-driven Jeep. Perfect for crawling if that's all you do. It's just old technology and not readily available at a reasonable price.

The 6.5's drop into the same exact mounts and position as the SBC's,even the exhaust pipes from stock sbc manifolds bolt up with no modification, they can be found in running condition for about $2500- $500 bucks oil pan to injector pump and turbo, and less if you go looking, the generally only have bad head gaskets, unless they got hot, the heads generally survive, new head bolts and an , gm recomended, torque method take care of that problem for good. I've seen broken cranks, cracked heads, had one that busted a main cap but I had the governor set at 7000 RPM and ran a set of Hooker super competition headers with flowmaster 3" duals (non turbo), they run about 4400 factory, so they work well in the mud and sand. I have a pretty wild stockpile of parts, even the 6.2's have quite a bit more torque than a 350 down low, they score 14- 20+ MPG depending how hard you lean on the throttle, the factory 6.5 turbo is rated 200 hp and around 400ft pounds of torque, I've got 18:1 pistons and marine injectors, (stock vary by year from 22.5:1 gm started lowering the compression about 85 on the 6.2) and run 25 pounds of boost with the sidewinder, some day I may put it on a dyno just to see what it's putting on the ground, basically for a swap like this all that's needed is a 92-99 Chev pu wrecked or just plain cheap, the 94 and up have an electronic injection system, which will require the ECM also, 82-93 6.2 and 6.5 use the stanadyne pump, the same as the 6.9 and 7.3 fords used just had relocated linkages. they weigh around 750 pounds, (not sure but the 4 banger cummins probably weighs as much and those things a gutless) so it's not really to heavy, about the same as a BBC. these things will fry the tires off of 7500# trucks and are surprisingly responsive. ever driven a hummer-1 this is what they have in them.

lots of people talk crap about them but they actually are extremely efficient and dependable, they aren't in any way a gas conversion like many think, back in 78 olds built a 350ci and a 260ci engine based on the gas engine but nothing will interchange or bolt in the gas motor, the heads will bolt on but that is it, the intake manifold is impared by the pumpdrive mount. My old man has a Delta 88 that he still drives, with a few mods like mine has, the stock power stroke and dodge can still out pull it with a huge load but I can make them work for every bit of it.

check out  thedieselpage.com for gm6.5 and duramax info. It's a member ship site but you can navigate through and read a lot of info without joining up.

I remember reading in, Pretty sure it was 4wheel and sport utility, about a cj that had a 6.2 in it, it was at some 4x4 event and the editor did a short description, mentioning it was one of few that had no mechanical problems during the event, cleared every obstacle it was pointed at and hardly used any fuel. I don't have all my mags with me this trip or I would find it.

heres some pics of a ATS turbo I had on a 6.2 (yes it's sitting on a 318) and a 6.2 that has melted #7 and #8 Pistons from the ATS turbo, I got it up to 1600 degrees on the drag strip a few to many times, in the pic it has a factory 6.5 turbo bolted on it just because of an arguement that resulted im my proving that it will bolt on.

NAH, I don't think $10,000 would sit well with my better half, she's putting up a fuss about the $600 that I want to put into a rear rotor swap.

I would love to have a diesel in my TJ, but after looking at all the diesels i can find i dont see many that would be a good swap.  i was as a score off road event and saw a 5.0 liter VW TDI, i was told they also make it in a 2.5 liter strait 5 cylender, after some research it looks like it would be the perfect motor to stuff in a jeep. unfortunatly it looks like it is non us only, thing as of right now. i talked to a couple of people at the vw dealership and they said it will be in US touaregs next year. might make for a great swap if i can find a wrecked one next year.

you should go drive a chevy with the turbo 6.5, they run like scalded dogs in the 6500-7500# trucks, imagine what they'll do in a 3500# jeep. they cost about the same as a small block chev and get nearly half again the fuel mileage plus the torque is amazingly strong, 300hp is very easily obtained from exhaust mods, not to mention it bolts in the same mounts and space as the sbc.
