It seems to me that since the 2.4L/6 speed combo was available in both the Liberty and TJ, that swapping a Liberty powertrain into a TJ would be a pretty straigh forward deal mechanically. The wrinkle would be ironing out the electronics, which shouldn't be too difficult. This means that if I found a wrecked donor Liberty with a 3.7L (or a CRD) that mechanically all i would have to do is fab up some motor mounts for things to fit up. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I know neither the 2.8 nor the 3.7 are powerhouses, but I don't have a huge TJ on 35s or anything. I like mine light, nimble, and easy on the drivetrain.

The 2.8L CRD diesel seems like a great swap on paper. Problem is working out the the electronics and finding a used engine for a reasonable price. The 2.8L has lots of sensors and electronics. It is not a simple diesel.
The 3.7L? I guess I don't see that as a great swap due to cost and difficulty. You would be better off with a 4.0L engine and tranny combo and it would cost less to do.

Isn't the 2.8L sold in Wranglers overseas? I am pretty sure I saw one abroad that had 2800 emblems on it. I think I could use the electronics from that setup, it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

buy the whole thing and have it shipped, register it at aunt betty's so you don't have to pass an emmisions test. I wouldn't mine having the crd either but is it really worth it in the long run?

Is anything we do worth it? I usually do it because it is a challenge and fun in a sick way. A 2.8 CRD in a TJ with some decent axles and a manual sounds like a sweet setup to me.

3.7 litre engine is poor at best, lousey torque at low rpm's. but the crd in my rubi? when the 4.0 blows in about 15 years, or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first, the crd is my swap choice. It would just be cool. And yes, diesel wranglers abound in africa, australia, europe, and I have seen 1 in Quebec. What GM did to the diesel engine in the 70's ruined any hope of this countries populace embracing diesel engines for a very long long time. What I would like to see is a cummins 4 popper swap into a wrangler. Just too heavey a motor to make that swap work. later on

The crap part is as soon as I finish the swap (or maybe even before) Jeep will come out with a Diesel Wrangler. I just know it. You are right about the GM thing. Those old boat cars with crap diesels in them (Oldsmobile barge anyone?) were junk. My grandfather has one that he bought new and he loves it. No problems whatsoever. It is his road trip machine. He also admits that he is the only person he knows of that has had no major issues.

gm laid down the path for everyone, The old man still drives one of those hybrid diesels, yep, the olds 5.7ltr delta 88, a 5,000 pound car that gets just under 30mpg. there is no stock 4.0 wrangler that he can't pass or out pull.

Why a 3.7? That thing is a turd! I'd be looking for a 3.0 CRD... now that would be fun in a Wrangler (drool)
So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

Yeah I agree, my original thought was a 4.7 (like one of the new Hight Output ones), but I thought it might be a bit heaver that I wanted to go, so I thought 3.7 and a supercharger (basically a 4.7 with two cylinders lopped off, so the swap similar to a 4.7 swap, which should be easy although I have never seen it done). But then I figured, while I was looking for a wrecked liberty to steal the 3.7 from, why not find a CRD one so I could have a wrangler like those lovely diesel ones I saw overseas.
Maybe I will just go buy a CRD Liberty or Grand Cherokee, total it, buy it back from the insurnace company for cheap, and swap away. Anyone have a better idea?

keep an eye on Copart and Insurance Auto Auctions, some vehicles are available for bidding by the public most you'll need a buddy with a dealers. it'll probably cost you around 5 to 10 grand for a wrecked one. check em out... shouldn't be to hard to find them, it took me about 15 minutes of fiddling around to find this one.

you won't go soft and fix the dumb liberty instead of tearing apart a perfectly good wrangler, will you? they can be found you see.

No, I wouldn't fix it.
Unless, if by FIX you mean drag the carcass out to the desert after I have raped it for everything valuable and use it for target practice, then toss it into a ravine somewhere.
