does anyone have any useful info on swapping out for a sbc with a 4-speed tranny and an np205 setup. i am looking for a detailed outline of the steps to install it. I work in a garage and am thinking about giving this a try. My jeep has a rough 240,000 miles or so on it, tranny is going bad and this might be a good time to try something like this. I can probably fetch a drivetrain for not much but i was wondering what all the other expenditures could be. I am aware that stock axles are a weak link. Has anyone done this? Sorry if this too long I have never posted on a forum. Thanks.

My buddy did this swap with the running gear out of an eighties chevy 1/2 ton, I think it had a dana 44 front, a 14 bolt rear, an sm465 trans and a NP205 transfer, he used an adapter from advanced adapters. He runs full width axles, the leafs line up the same as his Jeep YJ. This is a little wide for me. If you are going to use chevy running gear you might as well use it all because the stock punkin is on the driver side on the front of a jeep yj and chevy axles have the punkin on the opposite side. I did the conversion on my YJ with ford F350 stuff, narrowed 1 ton axles, D60R & sterling 10.25, with detroit lockers and gears. I used the stock np235 transfer with advanced adapters slip yoke eliminator kit ( modified). This keeps it narrower than full width axles.

if you go with a 1500 or 2500 88 and up 5 speed and t-case, the front output is where you need it. should have a 208 t-case unless its a 1 ton, after 91 or 92 the 1 ton will also work and have a borg warner t-case instead of the np 208.

thanks for the info. I may have to rethink my plan of attack. It may be too much work for my tired old jeep. I would rather find a yj that is in better shape frame and body wise, not that the swap is totally out of the picture, but my money might be spent better on a jeep that is in better shape. I really appreciate the information. THanks again.
