I read an article on the 8.8 a while back, but I haven't found it YET.
These tires were made for muddin and they're gonna throw mud all over you.

Ford Explorers are pretty common with 8.8s and everyone knows the junk yards are full of exploders!

I'm planning a Ford 8.8 Axel swap, D44 is not an option as there are none available that won't have the tires hanging out of the weal arch. My budget is limited so I wanna keep to the 8.8 as there are loads of them all over the place. I have a friend that owns a scrappy so I will probably get it for next to nothing.
I just wanna ask someone what do I do with my front axel. I doubt that by doing this swap the ratios will be the same, and tearing a drive shaft or messing up my T/C is not an option. So I would like to know if anyone knows if it is possible to take the front axel of a ford explorer and stick that in the front of my YJ?
I have 2 reasons for doing this, less confusion about parts, and fluids. The other I will yank the entire brake system from the Ford Explorer and have ABS. I want ABS because the people here drive like a bunch of yahoos, me included.
If the swap is possible, does anyone know if the front axel of a Ford Explorer is stronger than the front axel of a YJ?
AX-15 to NV4500 conversion on a YJ, all the low ratio you'll ever need!!

I ended up with a 93 explorer 8.8 rear drums. I've blown the one wheel cyclinder a couple times.... kinda irrating.... kinda scary the one time.

I did this swap in my TJ and I have enjoyed much good success! Go with a 96 through 2000 Ford Explorer. I am not sure when they went the IRS but I think that the 2000's still had the solid axle. The 96 or newers have the 31 spline shafts and disc brakes! And the Explorer uses the same 5X4.5" lug pattern as your YJ. The Ford ABS will not mate up with the Jeep ABS, but my Jeep holds brake better on steep hills and stops faster on dry pavement. So there is some take with the give.
Good luck! I think you will be happy with the swap overall.

The front axle out of the Ford Explorer is a Twin Traction Beam in early models and and IFS in later models. So you would have to change your front axle gears to match the rear or change the rear to match the front being as you would not be able to swap the front axle with the Explorer.

(YJ 383) -Just joined the forum and saw your post - this is the rear swap I am looking at doing for my 91 yj - glad to see you found one with 4.10 gears that gives me hope because thats what I have now. Were those factory gears and how much work did you have to do to spring mounts etc.....My understanding is that it is a pretty easy swap but was just curious about any headaches before I jump in. Thanks (sorry - I did actually notice that the post was forever ago but its a shot in the dark)
