my power steering started leaking the other day. i pulled the pump out to diagnose the problem. the o-ring on the hose, that goes into the pump, was gone i found pieces but no full ring. easy fix right, i put a new o-ring in, and put it all back together. now at low speed it moans and groans, and feels really notchy, if thats a word. it's fine at speed but below 20 it's rough and loud. what do i do?

if it's full and the belts are tight,..find another pump
when they are run low and without oil they tend not to last long.
first  turn the steering all the way back and forth to make sure the air has been bled, recheck the fluid level.

Like Mud said... bleed the air out of it and then if it keeps acting up you may be in the market for a new pump...

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

guess where I'm gonna be tomorrow night.. yep, Greater Las Vegas Auto Auction. I gotta grab a couple of units in Phoenix in the morning after I dump off my Tucson pieces. Probably be stuck in Vegas until Thursday morning. bring the screamer and I'll take a peak.
hopefully one of those o-ring pieces didn't make it into the pump.

missed you again. i was out in las cruces NM. family reunion. it's pretty much solved. one of the bolts was just a tad bit loose. causing the pump to twist under load. now the only time it squeels is at full turn but other than that it works again. which is good becouse i can't figure out which pump it takes. the closest thing i found was out of a 73 chevelle. the return line is still short by an inch and about a 10 degree bend. but if it goes that's what i'll go with. i spent almost a whole day trying to match it but no luck. let me know when you'll be back and we'll meet up.

cool, the early pumps have flare fittings instead of the nipple and o-ring, (around 1982 and under) the mounting brackets you have will bolt on almost all of the chevy pumps, car or truck, but you have to remove the pully to change them.

those little pumps will run more than just power steering, if you add the fluid capacity, rock rams, hydraulic dump beds, lift and lowering systems, you name it. the gm pumps on trucks with air conditioning actually have a resivor mounted away from the  pump they are the easiest to adapt for a hydraulic system. the presure is controled by a presure relief valve.
