A Question on Axle Models

I had a general question about axle models.  Do all the Dana 44 or Dana 30 axles have interchangable gears?  I know the widths of the overall axles change with different years and jeep models, is it the same for the ring and pinions?  Right now I´m not finding many gear swaps that actually say they are for a Dana 30 or 44 years 55-72, they all start at 72- whenever.  Can anyone tell me if I have Dana 44´s on the front and back or a Dana 30 in the front?  It sounds like a stupid question, i know, but i just don´t know.  can anyone give me the skinny?

Pretty much all of the older low-pinion Dana 44s and Dana 30s (1955-1972) remained unchanged. Even well into the '70s and '80s both of these axles are for the most part unchanged as far as gears are concerned. The 30 first went high-pinion with the XJ and YJ and the 44 went high-pinion on some late '70s Ford front axles. These require a different gearset than the typical low-pinion Dana 30 or 44. And even worse is that there is another version of the Dana 30, the TJ, WJ, and later XJ and ZJ have a version of the low-pinion gear set that uses a crush collar instead of shims which are found on the older axle. The gears do no interchange.

So if you need gears for an older Jeep Dana 30 the '72 Dana 30 gears will work. Same goes for the Jeep Dana 44.

I found out I have a Dana 25 in the front.  I also started looking for gears for it and the lowest ratio i found was 4.88.  I´m looking for a 3.73 but they are not listed anywhere for a 58 CJ5 it seems.  Are they interchangable with another model or something?  Or am I going to have to swap axles to get that ratio?

um 4.88 are a lower gear then that of 3.73s, do you have 3.73s in the vehicle now? or what size tire are you running? depends on how you, or were you drive it,post us back.

I´m trying to go faster at a lower rpm by staying with my original wheels and 30" BFG AT´s.  I´m goign to swap the engine to a buick or chevy V6 and put an overdrive in.  right now the axles are geared at 5.38.  sorry i always get confused when talking about ratios, what is higher and lower ratio.

I have discoverd that it is very difficult or near impossible to find 3.73 gears for a Dana 25.  The next step is 4.27, which is sort of available for the Dana 25, but i´m not sure because most places have TBA under the price.  Who knows what that means.  The 3.73 and 4.27 for that matter seem to be available for the Dana 27.  How easy is it to swap these axles?

TBA means: To Be Announced
