may or june had an axle article in that will help and lots of jeep history, may have been the 4wd and sport utility mag, I can't remember, I'll look through my pile when I get some time, throw up some picks, that will work also.

If the rest of the drivetrain is stock, you have a Dana 300 transfer case (good unit), a Dana 30 front axle (wide-track), and it could be an AMC 20 or a Dana 44 rear. Late '86 CJs came with the better Dana rear axle. If the diff cover looks like an old army helmet it's the 20, if it looks like a stop sign you have a 44.

it's got an almost stop sign shape with kind of a two stage hump, bigger side of the hump is to the drivers side. it has ten bolts holding the cover on.

if both axles look about like you described, then it's probly a 30 up frond and a 44 out back, the 44 will live quite well if it doesnt get continuously abused and the front, well the 350 will turn the axles/u-joints into a pretzle if you deside to do 4wd burnouts on the pavement. it will hold up as long you dont get to excited in the mudhole.
